Cheating by using godmodes and modifying game's code do not fall in this category, this isn't what I'm talking about.
Save states are in a different conversation, most often they're used to fix objective bad game designs from devs which plagued most retro games.
In games like FE where you can lose a character by a roll of dice, pure RNG that is completely out of your control save states are completely justifiable if they're used to avoid wasting time. What is the difference between turning off the game and relaunching at last save and using a save state to the beginning of the quest? Only a couple of minutes, nothing else.
A game like Darkest Dungeon is unarguably harder than any FE while also relying heavily on RNG but would never require you to use save states by virtue of having good game design which doesn't remove you from experiencing a major part of the game's narrative like losing a character in FE does.
