Indie devs and journos don't get why people liked that viral AI video.
Mind you, neither do the people who liked it.

whats that top left one looks cool

also I'm pretty sure that video wouldn't actually work as a real game, because in order for the effect to work your camera needs to be locked into a specific direction so your game would have to just be a series of straight line corridoors

>Mind you, neither do the people who liked it.
I liked that it was the pixel version of old fantasy artwork. It looks both flat and 3D.

I feel like the only way you're achieving that though is if you made it like a dungeon crawler so you're only moving forward, backwards, left, and right, and can only face cardinal directions. That way you could achieve that flat look without having to worry about shit being seen from the wrong angle.
I would love to play a dungeon crawler like that, but the average person gushing over this would be upset they didn't get an open world Elder Scrolls style game.

it wouldn't. i have actually thought about making a game like this.
you would need to make some sacrifices of course.
no open world map means you don't need to view every point of interest from every angle
instead you have an FTL style flowchart map, but instead of visualizing it like picrel, you visualize it within the backdrop of the environment
you can layer several sprites for different points of interest on top of eachother naturally because of the way hills work

In classic autism dev style, literally nobody understands WHY the AI video is appealing.

It's not because of the low res retro graphics.
It's not because it looks like a medieval western fantasy fps.
It's not because it's got a big castle.

It's because it looks big. There aren't obvious boundaries. That castle in the distance? Maybe you can go there. Those houses might be fully modeled inside. What's behind? A deep, dark forest? It all invokes a sense of mystery and the allure of discovery.

It's not fucking rocket science. Bethesda figured this about hour 20 years ago. But it takes real effort to create expansive worlds full of little things to discover, and devs today can't hack it. I can look at those indie games and guess pretty quickly exactly what existing game they're emulating. 3 of them just look like doom clones. That invokes nothing in me but the desire to roll my eyes.

If that was the case, people would just recommend Elden Ring. I thing it's the framing, which is an alien concept giving the open 3D nature vidya. I think the closest thing a 3D game can get to it is one with a restricted camera, like racing games. Probably some racing arcades from late 90s are the closest thing to that vibe, giving how much care they poured in the scenary.

really, its managing to capture that "liurnia of the lakes reveal" feeling. its a meme now, but that "see that mountain?" vibe.

Yeah, with a fair few of the ones they list in their article it becomes apparent very quickly that the game they're showing is just another regurgitation of old Doom/Heretic, the AI video doesn't have that issue, it's open ended enough that it keeps speaking to the imagination of what could be.

The reason people are talking about Daggerfall is this is just billboards and a big fancy skybox. It would be pretty easy to make something this nice looking from this specific angle with slightly higher res Daggerfall tech. But the castle isnโ€™t part of the โ€œlevel.โ€ Honestly itโ€™s mostly the skybox doing the work here. Halo is another example of a game series that got a ton of โ€œwowโ€ factor out of simple having elaborate skyboxes.

I don't like AIshit but it's not about it being pixel shit, it is about the "feeling of a grand adventure" ahead of you.
It is why people liked seeing the Erdtree far away in Elden Ring. It gave the impression of a massive world, it was a sight to behold.

People like it because of the absolutely ridiculously huge spooky castle that is grossly disproportionate to the village houses that are closer to the viewer. There's also the pixel houses along the road that get closer but look like they popped out of the distant background. The overall effect is this static, painterly background that unravels and becomes the interactive game world as one moves closer to it It's kind of mesmerizing but it seems like it would be hard to pull off in a true 3D free roam environment where there would be so many more directions to look in. Those who focus on the 1st person perspective with the pixelated hands moving up and down are missing the point

Well yeah, I just grabbed something off of search real quick that illustrates that particular trope. It's so common in concept art that a couple of AI models I've used will relentlessly try to ape it when you ask for a landscape even when you don't mention a character at all, probably since it makes up a good chunk of their training data for landscape art.

The gif has succeeded because of the following:
>a) it harkens back to the grandeur of classic fantasy adventures
>b) it's simple pixelated / painterly style offer a refreshing simplicity compared to modern graphics
>c) the vertical aspect ratio gives the scene a novel sense of vertical scale

I think this gif proves that gamers are craving a return to 4:3 aspect ratio retro 3D fantasy rpg games.

Elden Ring DOES have that sense of scale and it takes advantage of it for exploration.
Ironically, open world games struggle to have a sense of scale because they have to streamline it and they feel flat despite all the visual noise. A regular map with a nice skybox can give you a better sense of scale.

I think that clip proved that framing matters.

Having a ton of vertical space and chopping out the side bits, or reserving them for old school UI elements, could be utilised for immersion.
Some older tv/film just looks better because it was shot for a narrower resolution and so directors had more reason to frame stuff above the subjects.

I'm not here saying AI is great and all this shit, but you're looking at it in it's literal infancy. In 10, 20 something years how great will AI be then? No guarantee it will be, but AI could become as ubiquitous as smartphones, cars, etc. I have some faith AI can become great; it might not because of corpocuck greed and shit like that. You're welcome to that but it doesn't make for good gameplay, you can try that right now with Daggerfall and really find out how interesting it is. The image works best as an illusion of scale aka skyboxes. Having giantic spaces of nothing just isn't practical for gameplay. Imagine Starfield without loading screens, it'd be impressively big but still boring as shit.

My god are you so obtuse that you don't see what benifites or possibilities AI and LLMs can being to vidya? No, you're only thinking about the gay AAA game companies that want to sell you less and less, you not even owning it, and how they will find a way to make everything even lazier. Fuck those companies, you shouldn't be buying and funding their games anyway. Think of all the NPC dialogs that can become significantly more immersive when you can actually ask quest or world-relevant questions to and have a dialog, the intelligence of the combat AI adapting to your moves and history of weapons, or how new paths of completing a story can be made with negotiation.
>haha you actually think a character ai bot would be fun and immersive?
It literally can't be built if you keep poopooing and naysaying its existance, you're trying to write your own self fulfilling prophecy instead of giving it room to grow. Hell we just awoken to what AI could do a few short years ago, are you really so pigheaded you can't see what could be with refinement and development? Shut the hell up.

If a game has to be made to fit into 1-2 hour chunks being played per night, then it has to be spatially compressed enough that you'd get anywhere you want and be able to do something fun at that destination within that time limit.

I could see a system where nearby is voxel based, but mid range objects LOD models are just billboards, and at long range even the environment gets compressed into billboards.
To get the same look you would also need to curve the world upwards to have long distance visible even without the map being a valley + mountain like in the clip, as well as reducing depth/distance between objects the further from the player so long distance it looks like a popup book background/mostly flat painting

I just don't like AI because of laziness. It's as simple as why i don't like UE/Unity asset flips, the same principle applies of why it's bad. I don't know why that doesn't seem to make sense to some people on here. That actually doing all of your own modeling is an important part of the game development process. Even if you have to hire someone because you're not capable of doing it yourself. Then i see all of these people say all this retarded shit like it's 'political' and i don't get what the fuck people are talking about. Making your own assets is the bare minimum to show that you slightly care about what you're doing.

Cool concepts and tech demos have been made from asset flips. I don't like reusing assets for a lame gsmeplay experience, but Warioware was made on so many many assets from Warioland 4 and the rest are on a shoestring budget.
My qualm is that people hear AI and assume that a gen was just slapped in and then published, but that is such a tiny fraction of what AI's current modern day potential is. Suck Up presumably uses all its own assets but calls in LLM chatbots to handle the dialog, and your conversations are 50% of the gameplay. I think that's a tech demo that shows it's not all just trying to put something together and get it out something as fast as possible.

This """""""game""""""" """""""concept""""""" is a pipe dream and appealing exactly because it can't be done, it's like asking for a game where every frame is hand-drawn by an artist like in traditional animation and anything can happen and manifest at any moment yet still make sense instead of being bound to the way it was modeled and programmed

It's fundamentally at odds with the way games are made and that's what makes it interesting to people, like getting to play a dream instead of a boring old predictable 3D engine

No that's not your true feelings, it's always just about money and getting paid or some anti-capitalism rant.

In reality, someone using AI to make a game allows them to do more. So if you have two developers:
- Developer A: Uses AI to do some things while freeing up their time to spend work on other things.
- Developer B: Is not an artist, can't draw or maybe can't program, creates a piece of shit.

You're saying you would appreciate Developer B more, but this doesn't matter because Developer A's extra work gains result in a higher quality product while Developer B's product looks like a crayon drawing (pixel platformer most likely) and you're like a parent praising your child's drawing.

It would in fact be a higher quality product, because we've already established that Developer A and Developer B are working the same amount of time in this hypothetical, just that one is able to do much more work than the other thanks to AI.

Meanwhile in every anti's unrealistic hypothetical, you have the hardworker spending 10 years hardcrafting an experience versus the AI user who doesn't spend an equal amount of time. Why? Because you lose if the time is equal.

the issue is 99% of indie devs using AI only just decided they were interested in game development a year or two ago because they think their ideas are above having bad art, meanwhile the other developer has been making shit despite it looking bad because they actually like making games, not the idea of it

I'm not against capitalism at all. But i would not associate the AI user with any amount of hard work in most scenarios. That rule does not specifically mean that everyone who is an artist is good at what they do, just that they're MAYBE not relying on a crutch to the person with zero hours. I bet you assume that every dev that makes use of AI to free up their time can actually code or do something else. But what if it's all a crutch?

I think AI will inadvertently create a bigger demand for higher quality media created by actual people. The amount of goop humans who will be using AI to create the same exact shit over and over again is going to be insane. You already see it now; the moment something inventive comes out you have half a dozen chink/poo versions of it out within a year. The speed and number of those is only going to get worse.

The saddest part about all of this is that the cycle of you being able to sit down and enjoy something new and interesting is going to be cut down significantly. Gone will be the days of having something niche for any reasonable amount of time. Gatekeeping will be all but impossible. The creation will either need to be aggressively autistic to keep hordes at bay, or you'll simply have to go offline to not experience its death or see it bastardized.

But all companies are going to mandate AI usage. And they're not going to reduce the amount of hours that workers work.

So they will in fact be more productive than they used to be, because they're able to get more done.

Thats not what I meant by refinement. I meant, primarilly, being able to perform the same operations with significantly less peocessing and power consumption. Remember how 3d rendering on computers took hours for a single image in the 90s and we sharpened that down a great deal in the last 35 years. Anin to that, significantly cutting the power and prossesing needs for thr operation can allow AI to run locally much easier and efficiently.

Just make anything that isn't a tree walk-through.
>Also, the lack of seamlessness will drive away a lot of people

>Niggers in this very thread are arguing that this looks nothing like Daggerfall
Because it doesn't as as Daggerfall lacks detailed enviroments like in the video and has shit terrain.
>also the compositions wonโ€™t be as impressive because theyโ€™ll actually have a function and exist in real space, instead of just being a cool skybox
Just have a longer draw distance. It won't look as cool as in the video, but it will look passable enough with enough detail

Actually yes. Part of my enjoyment of open worlds (even more so for fantasy games) is to enjoy nature in them. Nature is huge. It needs scale. The Just Cause franchise is the closest. It actually has real mountains.
There is plenty of ways to make it not painful or boring. Game and quests design. A teleport system (I would do a cart taxi that goes only to cities and villages. The furthest you go from civilization the costliest it gets.
The economy is also always super lazy in those games. There needs to be way more options to earn AND spend money. That's another subject.

Foliage is fine even if you used the same sprite it's the houses and other inorganic objects.

>It's a trees
The area shown in the gif had a lot of treets in close proximity therefore it would be inaccessible

Those were just the technical limitations of the time, but these morons still don't realize that at its core, it's the same.

No I'm hoping (coping) that Crimson Desert and GTA 6 will be good. Last open game I truly enjoyed was Witcher 3, a 10 year old game. I'm busy in life with work. I want a game that can be my everything game, where I can relax and chill in it.

That's a complaint I have with Elden Ring. There is no NPCs, villages or cities. It not a place you want to relax in.

What people don't seem to understand that this is very basic AI that anyone can run. When you actually move to the highest level AI systems that are available RIGHT NOW, and combine them with supercomputers/quantum computers... they can literally generate an Elden Ring level game. And the technology is only getting better.

This is just FPS Kaer Morhen but with an ugleh retro meme filter. At the end of the day it's a big open world game so it's a genre only big studios could create. We still haven't seen a competent successor to TES

>Open world

Nothing has exceeded the mediocre TES games despite it being a veritable goldmine niche and unlike other genres there's no competition. Bethesda are dead already.

Well if you gatekeep fledgling artists from grinding their craft alongside pros in a real job you get fewer and fewer professional artists. It already happened with traditional animation whose trade secrets largely evaporated with the digital market shift. That's what AI will do yet again but across all categories. It's a race to the bottom with public corporations who have every incentive to take the easy cheap option. We lose generations of knowledge when we let corporations dictate the shift.
