Yes. I love classic fantasy and I am really upset that it got overtaken completely by progressive fantasy.

Here is the thing: I actually wouldn't care if individuals wanted to run their own campaigns with sparklefoxes, trasngendered characters, and pansexual gay polyamorous group sex. That is their own business. The problems are:
1. The main source of fantasy: D&D has completely shifted to a pro-progressive attitude and has sanded off every bit of edge and traditional/conservative (I don't mean D vs R, you retards) fantasy. It is now entirely just based around appeasing women and the tumblr/Critical Role crowd. This goes doubly for PF2e which is somehow even gayer.
2. Young men have basically completely abandoned reading fiction and fantasy. Young men used to make up the majority of readers of fantasy/fiction novels. Now young men are only like 15-25% of fiction readers. Almost all fiction is aimed at women. This is 100% true by the way, and tons of studies have tried to understand the "male reading crisis" because men have simply stopped reading books, and when they do read it is almost entirely non-fiction.
3. Games have done the same and still almost all care about just going with progressive fantasy. They understand the tropes and try to subvert all of them. Ironically, at this point an actual classic fantasy adventure would be subversive.

Overall, I am just sad. I think there is more than enough room in this genre to have things for everyone. People can have their progressive fantasy, but traditional fantasy is not even allowed. It has an audience. It would do well. It is just killed in the cradle by publishers, authors, and developers with an agenda.

Yes. Fantasy isn't supposed to mirror reality, or show reality on steroids. It's supposed to be fantasy. Everybody has to see themselves represented in everything now or they just can't enjoy it. A person in a wheelchair can't abide playing a character that can walk apparently, so Battle Wheelchairs are now a thing so that their fantasy character can resemble and reflect reality as closely as possible.

The thing about tabletop games is that they really only hold the most value to the people involved. Put whatever gremlins you want in that old style and it looks good.
Put the people up top in the bottom style and it will still look bad.

Back in the day, they were progressive for daring to challenge religion and mass media, for idolizing intelligence and creativity instead of authority and charisma.

The difference is old DnD is math geeks, and new DnD is theater kids. Two completely different nerdy demographics; and they're incredibly incompatible with each other. It's simulationism vs. narrativism, math vs acting. That's where the real old/new divide lies.

It's the composition and silhouettes. Each character on the top has a distinct pose and color scheme.

The problem with modern Wizards of the Coast-esque "Fantasy" is it misses an incredibly important core feature of compelling fantasy: An actual real sense of Adventure. Which requires a strong sense of danger. And part trepidation, wonder, and mystery.

Picrel is a piece of old DnD art: "City of Sin". Notice how dangerous everything is? It's a nasty red light district, and it's filled with nasty and awful people. Yet this is a peak environment ripe for being the crossroads of the start of an adventure. A sense of realism, grime, trepidation, real danger. You notice in old DnD art too, the grimy meanness is not required. In the OP picture is a handpainted work with colors that really blend and a sense of action and trepidation behind everything, but also intrigue and wonder.

There's a bit of that in the new art, color, magic, wonder- but they miss the other most key ingredients to creating an air of true fantasy adventure. Digital art also being way too crisp and high resolution tends to make it feel far less old and mystical like old DnD art.

Nu-DnD is all soft and friendly. Probably drawn by a girl who likes cute things and abhors scary things. Consumer market approved. Hard edges sanded off. There is no danger and it's a soft friendly world for you and your normal middle class extremely casual friends to jump in and enjoy with no real sense of risk or scary things happening.

Sense of real adventure: Gone.

As for the aesthetic, especially the use of lighting to set the mood, there is one game that sticks out in my mind that shows off this look: Elden Ring.

If you read AD&D Appendix N, it's clear that the game was born as a pulp fantasy simulator, taking inspiration mostly from writers of heroic fantasy and adventure sci-fi. In its purest essence D&D is Conan, Poul Anderson, Vance, and those types of serialized, muscular adventures of mighty men braving exotic lands for coin, glory and power, rescuing bad-tempered princesses on the way and leading armies of companions to battle against inhuman or decadent foes.

Modern fantasy is simply not about that type of adventure anymore and quite frankly, it has become too femenine to even try. D&D, a reflection of the tastes of its creators and players, can't help but follow and lose its edge in favor of interpersonal drama and sensible pretty boys without an ounce of ambition on their bodies. That classes lost their ability to gather followers and lead armies should be proof of this.

Go read the Conan stories, or even the comic adaptations: Marvel's old Heart of the Dragon isn't bad at all, nor are the Black Horse's versions. You could also pick up Poul Anderson's Three Hearts Three Lions, or even Vance's Dying Earth, as both are fairly short novels.

For more complex stuff, Gene Wolfe's Wizard-Knight is essentially an old-school D&D campaign following the journey of a paladin, and it's really fucking good. Book of the New Sun? Even better.

I feel like there was a change in/after 3,5, there was always one more or less obnoxious person in all parties, but it usualy revoleved around him beinf metafag or just being all about himself.
