Try FFIX, FFX or FFVII, they are the best for newcomers. For the modern ones, i suggest FFVII remake.
Then, FFVI, FFV are good.
The rest are more like for fans. Not bad games, but less standard.

Of the six, I think Aerith, Gustave, and Lune have the shallowest characterization. Maelle is the most fleshed out obviously.

Not a big fan of rebirth so far. I took my time, explored a little, then progressed to the snake boss only to learn I’m still way underleveled and have to waste hours grinding 15 second fights. I liked remake because it had a good flow of content and feeling of progress with very little work on my end. Just sit back and be entertained for a few hours.
