You should only 100% your games if it's a meaningful experience (which it hardly ever is). If it's a shallow grind, then you're better off spending your time playing another game instead.

I already have dozens of games in my backlog. Why would I waste 20 hours trying to squeeze the last bit of mediocre gameplay from a game I've already beaten, when I can move on to something else?

This is exactly how I feel towards Odyssey, fun to beat, an absolute slog to complete.
Now that I think about it this also applies to other 3D Mario games to a lesser degree, 64 and Sunshine has the repetitive red coins and the god awful 100 coin stars. The Galaxy duology also has the purple coins stars which are also boring as hell.

I'll never understand how my friend could stand 100%ing the old FF games. The amount of obscure nonsense and useless shit to do felt like such a bore. He was pretty pathetic, because he'd more do it as an achievement in of itself. Like getting all the achievements meant something.

I will use 100%ing as an excuse to keep playing a game I enjoy once I finished but I've only 100%ed maybe 40ish games and will stop once it gets tedious.
I will however, return to many games to pick up where I left off on 100%ing them.

>How often do you 100% your games
I am autistic about getting all achievements, for which I use the following criteria
- Generally single player games only, If I can get all achievements on a multiplayer game that's nice but it's not something I try to get
- I enjoy the game enough that I am either willing to play through the entire game again or willing to keep playing from an earlier save to get missing achievements
- Achievements are not too grindy (kill 100,00 enemies when you barely get to 1/10th of that in a regular playthrough)
- Achievements are not too estoeric to the point that having a wiki on hand won't really help
- Game doesn't keep updating with new achievements long after I stopped playing (Terraria and Stardew are examples of this)
- Game comes with achievements in the first place, no retroachievements
I don't really 100% games if that isn't required for getting all achievements

rarely on my first period of playing a game. most recently did this with starship troopers: terran command where i beat the game then very shortly afterwards went back for any achievements i missed.
typically i'll do it over a few year period for stuff like half-life 2 where i just focus on a few achievements per yearly/seasonal playthrough.
if it's a game with any sort of co-op/multiplayer, almost never since they typically have impossible achievements (meet the devs, upload a video and get 1million views, etc), so painstakingly boring, or 500+ that i'll never bother.

100%ing a game should serve as an "excuse" to continue playing it should you want to
Like oh, I really like rondo of blood, let me play it again so I can rescue all the maidens! Do I care about rescuing maidens? Not really, but I do want to play rondo of blood, so this is a good outlet for doing so, a way to channel the replayablility.
Scoring/speedrunning serve the same function, just that collecting things (even ranks) is feels more tangible than a arbitrarily faster time or higher score
I guess in something like an rpg it could serve as an excuse to hang out in the world you like longer

Including "beat the final boss with the starting weapon" (or in other words beat God to death with a lead pipe) which stood out to me for how inherently absurd yet trivially easy it was. (Just reforge your basic bitch lead pipe with +6000 ATK. Orichalcum, it breaks the game.)

And 100%ing them usually requires you to play perfectly without getting hit while constantly dealing with a bunch of spastic enemies.
If I were to seriously try to complete Dante Must Die/Non Stop Climax or Ninja Master I would probably start to hate those games.

I don't know what it is about RPGs, but I always seem to completely lose interest in them just as soon as I get to the final dungeon. All the protagonists get their bullshit stories resolved and finally rally together to face the final big bad, and I'm just like "Nah, I'm sick of all of you." If I do finish the game, it's usually with a deep resentment driving me to make sure I don't have cause to play it again.

Only when the game really resonates with me, which isn't very often.

The last game I 100% was Stellar Blade. Even then I hated the other two endings where you don't get 100% of Lily's trust and take Adam's hand at the same time, so I just used a save file to get those endings and beat the final boss that's exclusive to the worst ending (which turned out to be as easy as making it run and then you get all the achievements for it lol).

Still, I could see myself replaying the good ending to 100% for a good while because I like the game a lot. It's not something I do often nor care to do. I might try to do it with Nier:Automata and Nier:Replicant but if I don't at least I'll enjoy the games.

I've been thinking about this. I don't 100% games. But what does that mean? Wouldn't a "gamer" finish their games? It's been really bothering me lately.

I always see people post their platinum trophies and shit, and I couldn't imagine working that hard for it. Getting all 500 collectibles, grinding every item/character to level 100 for no reason and all that.

Think about it. "Work". I would consider doing as such "work". If you bring this up to "real gamers", they will insist it isn't work, and they had fun doing it. Not for me. If it isn't fun and it's "work" for me... what does that mean?

>Did you finish that game?
>Yes, I saw the ending on hard difficulty.
>But it says here 47% completion? You didn't finish it?
>I uhh... I guess not...

I love video games, don't I? I've played "through" 400+ of them. I'll take 3 hour long drives to see an arcade location test. I basically saved the "video game club" back in college... "president" 4 years... reluctantly.

But "finishing games is work"...

I don't really see the point, I mean I try to experience everything a game has to offer, but some stuff is really grindy, poorly designed, or brutally hard for no reason, or is just a lot of extra fluff for no reason.

Like Spyro 2 and 3 for example. I think it is totally fine to try to go for 100% of all of the orbs/eggs but the gems and especially finding the skill points can be really tedious and don't offer much, even when considering Spyro 3's Super Bonus World is just a shitty rematch with the sorceress and the true ending.

That isn't really 100%ing F-Zero GX.

To 100% that game you basically have to beat each cup with each machine on each difficulty, plus buying all of the items (excluding those locked behind region locks and cheat codes), and beating every story mode mission on each difficulty.

If you think Mission 7 on Very Hard is bad, try making someone do Emerald and Diamond cups on Master with Blood Hawk, Silver Rat, and Cosmic Dolphin.

I liked Dark Souls 1 so much that I did a challenge run to obtain every item in the game on a single character, I played to NG+4 for sufficient boss souls to craft all boss weapons and farmed all the random drops in the entire game, it was actually fun. I made comprehensive lists with pen and paper back then lmao.

I think the last game I 100% was Crash 1 from the N.Sane trilogy.

Really, in most games, 100%ing is just tedious as fuck. Even in games you love, you'll probably have to interact with the game system you like the least a ton, and even the game system you like will become monotonous work. But I guess this all assumes you meticulously

I really hated going through each level missing all those collectables because I just so happened to not kill certain enemies the right way or something when it only tells me afterwards.
But plowing through each level at the speed of sound and aiming for the collectable was far more fun

I don't play games which take more than a single digit number of hours to complete. They're always shit.
If the game can be 100% complete in up to 9h59m, I'll do it. Otherwise I'll just beat the game normally.

When I finished a game and I'm only missing one or two achievements and I got all the other ones without even trying then I might get the remaining one or two if they're easy to get but that only happened once so far.

Other than that I simply do not care about them. I am able to set my own goals and get my own fun out of video games. Someone providing me with a list of arbitrary goals doesn't interest me at all, I play however I want.

god, there are quite a number of games I absolutely ruined for myself by trying to 100% them. I enjoyed ni no kuni to a degree playing it normally. However, the 100%? It's flaws become glaringly obvious and you realize it's actually pretty poorly designed.

didn't quite ruin it, but KH Re:Coded is also a game that's pretty good if you just finish it and do a couple of the extra stuff. But then you go for 100%? You start wondering why this was the series you developed a life long obsession for. Combat is real good, some of the best in the series despite being on the nintendo ds, but it just doesn't make up for having to repeat the episodes over and over again.

Depends on ease, reason, and favoritism. The Binding of Isaac for example, I've got it 100%'d, and that's no quick or simple task. It's a favorite of mine I'd play often though, and goals are basically "beat every path every way, do some funny stuff, see every item". I naturally gain progress with anything I do, and those asks, many as they are, encourage me to engage with everything the game has to offer. On the other hand achievements that're time sinks for the sake of it, some random impressive number perhaps, that's a waste if it's not proportional to the others. Games that give you a "hard mode" but overdo it like say, beat the full campaign only with headshots, I don't wanna fucking bother. And games that have very simple and easily attainable asks but I'm not all that into, I'm not driven to go back into it just to say I fully beat it. All this text to say I'll 100% any game I like that puts thought into what that means and doesn't bust my balls for wanting it.

I used to be an achievement slut because I had no money and making a number next to my name go up felt good. Don't care about that stuff at all now.
I got all achievements in Elden Ring because it was fun. Before that, the last game I 100%ed was Ninja Gaiden II. And I've finished Mario 64 with all stars and some other platformers and puzzle games and shit.
I really like JRPGs and would probably 100% some of those for fun but basically all of them have some stupid quest where you need to talk to a guy outside a cave but only at night and it has to be raining and it can't be before you've beat the boss to the area and you need chicken soup in your inventory and it has to be Thursday in real life and if you miss the quest then you're locked out of it for the entire game. This shit is just obnoxious.

Some people do it to compensate the innate desire to do "work" by doing inane menial busywork and checklists.
There are some games worth 100%ing though and i'd argue there are those games i only enjoyed when going for full completion since only then the full gameplay unfolded and the game allowed me to do what i want

Favorite ones for 100% completion were the original Spyro trilogy (especially 1 and 3) and Batman: Arkham Asylum
The most boring ones were Crysis 3 and Valkyria Chronicles 2
