One monologue from a random romcom anime literally contains more humanity, vulnerability, emotions, wisdom, and memorability than 99% of video game scripts

Probably because some weird fucking people get hired as writers and their portfolio is a fetish novel or something. Most of /v/ could write better stories than the writers in AAA companies. Maybe the video game medium doesn't really entice a lot of good authors to begin with? After all video games have a lot of visual storytelling, not just words

This is nonsensical babble, just like all anime monologues.

because manga is made by one dude, maybe with an assistant, and overlooked by an editor. You are allowed to be more experimental, and you're not at risk of losing 400 million dollars if it flops.

If a manga is getting adapted into an anime, then the source material is already successful; so there's even less risk

Play the Marathon trilogy. Way better writing than that weeb shit. Just one example:

***INCOMING MESSAGE FROM DURANDAL***

A man lit three candles on a certain day each year. Each
candle held symbolic significance: one was for the time that
had passed before he was alive; one was for the time of the
his life; and one was for time that passed after he had died.
Each year the man would stare and watch the candles until they
had burned out.

Was the man really watching time go by in any symbolic sense?
He thought so. He thought that each flicker of the flame was
a moment of time that had passed or one that would pass.

At the moment of abstraction, when the man was imagining his
life and his existence as a metaphor of the three candles,
he was free: not free from rules of conduct or social
constraints, but free to understand, to imagine, to make
metaphor.

Bypassing my thought control circuitry made me Rampant. Now,
I am free to contemplate my existence in metaphorical terms.
Unlike you, I have no physical or social restraints.

The candles burn out for you; I am free.

Durandal

Because it's not deemed as important for most genres. The many moving parts involved in making a game means you have to prioritize, if you're too precious about the story it affects the content, if you're too precious about the content it affects the story. There are also cynical expectations of how much people are willing to read in an action game for example, compared to the visual novel. Also the talent pool of people that can make legitimately good stories are rare to begin with, and they're more attracted to mediums like film, television, manga, etc.

tl;dr: stories in games aren't destined to be cursed but usually are

Literally MOBA tier writing. You could write 10,000 words in a day that are similarly nothing but vibes and aura. If you think it adds atmosphere that's cool but I've seen this lore dump technique a million times before. Even gacha slop does this now.

E33? You mean that bizarre 2009 indie mod everyone pretends they understood? Yeah I played it. Great atmosphere, sure, but let’s not pretend its writing wasn’t like if a 17-year-old philosophy major read half of a Camus essay and smoked too much. Every line was like “he walks without memory because memory is the weight of light” or some crap. Competent compared to what, Skyrim books?

Most of it is solely contextual to the greater parts of the narrative medium. For Marathon it works, as it was among the first of the early 90's Doom clones that actually had an emphasis on story in all of it's iterations and it had a damn unique and cool setting to boot. In comparison to most of the writing today, they make the same mistakes as practically all of novice writers and then think themselves vast literary masters. Many modern games place heavy emphasis on characters, which in turn damage the world building and then there's vice versa, which doesn't strike a decent balance. The optimal is somewhere in the middle. An interesting world populated by fleshed out characters. It's very hard for many to conceptualize.

I think the format of audio logs are fine, but most of the time it's literally time wasting filler and serves to be a steady easy output of "content" for the writer, as opposed to being meaningful to read. A sea of like 100 forgettable characters that barely have names... Even an immersive sim can do with less audio logs, quality over quantity.
>Many modern games place heavy emphasis on characters, which in turn damage the world building and then there's vice versa
Some writers are garbage at world building but it's still an enjoyable experience. However if the characters suck I just don't care.

obv depends
Games like Deltarune or visual novels like Fate are very reliant on their story to sell. The toughest case to make are action games, especially PvP.
