It's way better than watching a review if you need to decide whether to purchase the game. No journalists, only pure footage.
And games where you just sit back and relax and watch what's onscreen exist (visual novels, point and click adventures). For some games, the whole point is seeing the sights and immersing in the world, not actually testing your skills (think of all the games played by Manlybadasshero).
It's also good if you watch someone play who is better than you. You learn a ton of tricks (ZFG for Zelda, Legendoftotalwar for Total War and so on).

I appreciate your answer anon. I feel like this question in particular is different for everyone. I've been making vids for a bit now and I'm trying to figure out a happy medium between how much time I'm spending editing vs streaming. Which honestly all comes down to how aggressive I am with cutting out downtime, which takes forever to do properly. Personally I'm perfectly fine with downtime, but I'm always extremely critical of everything I do even though I don't apply that to others.

But I actually think I like downtime quite a lot, even if I'll have trouble putting why into words.

Not many people will sing the praises of "-nothing-going-on-" but sometimes it seems to result in some of my favorite streams to rewatch.
Joel has done two great examples.
His 6 original Signal Simulator streams were often really boring where there would be stretches of time where he'd literally just be doing essentially work simulation.
I don't know if having this kind of downtime was giving him the opportunity to think, and think about what to say next, but he has some very raw and real discussions of UFOs on those streams, which make those streams very rewatchable to me.
He also did his like ... 15 hour Flight to Brazil in Microsoft Flight sim, and while he had a lot of planned bits and gags peppered in, planned segments like the in-flight food reviews and in-flight movies, there was a lot of just silence and him flying the plane, and that's kinda nice.

Oh fuck and I guess one of my favorite bits he's ever done, reminded of it because he played the Switch 2 update of the GTA collection and revisited the Sprunking - the original Sprunk incident he basically tranced out to 80's power music for 40 fucking minutes in silence while buying cans of sprunk over and over until the game crashed.
Idk why that worked, I don't know who else could do something like that and have it be funny, but the chat was going wild and it was fucking hilarious.

It's like some psychic/energetic thing I guess. Like being at a concert and everyone's on the same page and we're all motivated to see the same thing.

I've had my Dragon Quest 3 Remake stream just sitting on my hard drive since beating it around launch. I've held off editing it because I had to clue how I wanted to do it, and honestly I still kind of don't. It's an awkward period because I felt like this was the game/set of streams that really taught me how to commentate better. I think my streams today are LEAGUES better thanks to the DQ3 streams. As I'm editing it now, the start is really rough, but when I skip through the later streams it's a much more different/confident vibe where the downtime doesn't feel as uncomfortable like you mentioned. I think JRPG's in general are one of the tougher genre's to streams and make videos of

There are broadcasters who do streams of obscure Finnish-only games made by 16 year olds, 0.1% rarity itch.io pulls, point-and-clicks made in 2000, mods for 1994 X-Com etc. I have no interest for these (otherwise i'd find them myself), but the fact that there's no information about it adds to like several hundred people trying to deduce what is actually happening with the only info given from the Internet or the broadcast.
Also, the chat itself is a very lenient environment where you can see someone posting something, shoot a couple of messages and then never see them again, kinda like 4chan. There are people sharing offtopic things that are interesting (like someone sharing their experiences with German property law or some shit) that you wouldn't normally talk about with anyone but they've already started the conversation so why not tap into it.
I don't really like "friend simulators" since a lot of the time it devolves into full-blown seething once someone says anything out of line, like there's a lot of pent up hostility or something.
