Just started playing this despite people saying it's overrated. It's fun, I enjoy just walking around and hitting enemies with different patterns. Why doesn't /v/ like it?

/v/ is filled with contrarianism, being assblasted the series they liked arent more popular or not considered as good, and also parroting shit about games they havent played
just ignore it and enjoy, it gets better and better past the early game, it ends up with the best enemy movesets and nonlinear progression of the genre

and remember: back before it got mainstream, the only people who knew about it on /v/ were enjoying it

Sad but true, this is the board I use the most but as always, I don't know if I should believe anything I read. Will keep going, I'm having a lot of fun, then I can start waiting for silk song like the rest of HK fans kek
Thanks bro.

Personally I don't care about the corpse run souls mechanic as it's either frustrating when you're new to the game permanetly lose on geos because you died before getting back your shade, or it feels pointless when you're decent enough at the game that you run past enemies and are familiar with the level design to navigate back to it. Also you can just quit and reload to bypass the death penalty anyways.

Regardless it's still a really solid metroidvania game.

because we’ve played super metroid and symphony of the night

I've played Super Metroid and think HK is better. In SM You can just spam Y and kill everything, and the enemies are just mostly just contact damage things. I liked it, yeah. Going around and getting stuff makes you feel incredibly powerful, and literally having some way to proceed or at least go back to a spot where you can explore again EVERYWHERE is amazing, such level design is really cool. But fighting any enemy and boss in Hollow Knight ends up being way more fun. Haven't played SoTN though.

For me it's isthmus tear
I probably spent about 20 hours wandering around and making zero progress because of that one shitty item. The games NEEDS an npc in the home hub to give you a nudge in the right direction.

Silksong, just a week away, can you believe it?

this is the first year where TC actually speaks of a release date, claiming its 2025
so its good timing

i think theres something really cool about the corpse mechanic: you can use your own shade to pogo or boost yourself to places you otherwise couldnt reach. i like doing that to fight Nosk early, for instance

Metroidvanias tend to be overrated

The platforming/movement is dull in a game that’s half platforming. And the powerups are really boilerplate. It’s good, but the excessive redditor praise is annoying

Calling something overrated isn't hating it. Sat down and finished it for the first time last summer on Switch, liked it but felt it was too big and open for its own good, leading to way too much wandering around, which bloats the playtime (the game isn't actually le 40+ hours long). On a whim like a week ago decided to play it again on PC and couldn't put it down, but that's mostly because I love metroidvanias in general, liked it more on my second playthrough because I had an idea on where and when to go and managed to get the 100% clear in under 20 hours. Hollow Knight is definitely a good one, great even but its not the best of all time like a ton of retards love to spam.

I agree. I spent way too much time in the coliseum of fools thinking I needed to beat it to progress

Same, eventually gave in and just looked up what to do, turned out I walked past the room with the Crystal Heart several hours prior. Seriously, what the fuck where they thinking? They had an area boss but put a mandatory upgrade in a room that's further ahead and is one you can easily bypass but still feel like you're making progress because there's hardly any dead ends anywhere. Hopefully Silksong irons out this type of shit because supposedly that game's map is like 50% bigger than Hollow Knights, so that can get retarded really fast. Beat boss, get rewarded by mandatory upgrade, simple, no need to fuck with that formula.

people simply value other aspects more than you
platforming is mostly dull because platforming is mostly not the focus, but there are few cooler platforming gauntlets than the White Palace for instance

White Palace is just shitty Celeste/Meatboy spikes and sawblades design, and there are a ton of platforming segments, like the crystal cave area. The game has no momentum, it’s flash game physics. People having shit taste and cooming over a game cause it reminds them of their thousandth fromslop is not my problem
Anonymous No.716424126
>>716421797
its inspired and the pogo flows good
not every game needs to have high momentum, people will bitch about the games with actually a fuckton of momentum being floaty
it doesnt matter if its technically basic if path of pain has more interesting tricky challenges than 99% of metroidlikes

>thousandth fromslop
yeah, i too hate iframe dodge spam, estus flask mechanics, shoehorned leveling mechanics, bonfire warping as opposed to more interesting forms of fast travel, people copying ds3 linear worlds instead of making it ds1 styled.. Oh wait, HK has none of these

Yep, I eventually figured it out without a guide but I wasted hours backtracking running around in circles. That golem heart should have been awarded by beating the crystal guardian dude, period.

Overall it's good but there are several bosses that are just frustrating dogshit to deal with, and to get the actual ending you have to fight pure bullshit.

Too many dead ends open up whenever you get a new ability. The world is huge and the stag stations are always as far away as possible from wherever I am and where I want to get so they're practically useless. I like a lot about the game but most of my time was wasted slowly walking across huge stretches of the map to check one of 50 places I might be able to do something in now. Only to find out I still can't do anything there yet. Rinse and repeat until you luckily find the path that actually leads to something.
