Some of the characters become important again in later games. Yeah, it has saturday morning cartoon-level plot and characterization, but it also has continuity.
If you're not trying to 100% them you probably won't get burn out anyway. The gameplay is 99% the same after 1.

The issue is the internet itself, it has many areas with the same design so it's very easy to get lost on it, and there's a very infamous scenario with a puzzle that gets annoying to do.
Operate Starforce for DS fixes those issues a bit by giving you a minimap on the bottom screen and the infamous scenario works differently.
It's also very basic combat wise and the mechanics don't begin to shine until BN2

You can't run from random encounters unless you draw the Escape chip or are playing the rerelease (OSS). You get healed after every battle and can have like 10 copies of any chip in your folder so you can be powerful as fuck. There's the armor system that exists. Shanghai.exe is one of the best fan games ever made and combines every great feature ever made for Battle Network into one game and it's totally free.

For a bit more backstory - the original devs were Japanese but they got a DMCA or some shit from Capcom and stopped working. So some talented folks over at /jp/ took the game, integrated almost finished content and made as much as they could to fully complete the game and today it is safely considered "99% complete"

If you haven't played Shanghai.exe and you consider yourself a MMBN fan then you need to get to it ASAP. It is THE BEST MMBN GAME.

No. 1 has some bad game design here and there but it was their first game in the series. The DS remake of it (Operate Shooting Star) irons all that out leaving only 4, and 4 is only bad if you want to 100% it otherwise it's just "Whatever". You can't run from battles unless you have an Escape chip which means you have to waste folder space on it however you automatically heal to full HP from every battle except in Elecman's stage iirc when your PET battery runs out
The general internet area is a literal fucking maze so you'll be relying on the other people's pages to travel deeper in the net instead of having warps in your general starting point like the later games
There's no navicust which means you have to buy or find HP and Buster Power Ups also the armors were pretty useless
and that's pretty much it the DS version fixes a lot of shit by letting you run from battles, the bottom screen functions as a map so you can tell where you're going which was the major complaint

L code has easy access to strong swords, area grab and drill 3. oh and Tornado too. Also Seaseed* slows and doubles Tornado damage.
C code has the Cosmo prism PA and the antidamage + varsword combo which is so safe its basically broken.
There are all kinds of powerful combos in many different codes.

I can only sort of see that perspective in the sense that the Navi chips need to be powered up to max in most cases to hit onshot damage thresholds.
