Here's what I'm playing as we speak. I like to collect screenshots, so I can prove that I finished around 70-90 JRPGs. I started collecting them around 12-14 years ago, but started playing JRPGs over 25 years ago, and back then I had much more time on my hands.
And yeah, I may have gone too far with that "10 times", but 5 times should be right. I at least tried playing easily 80-90% JRPGs that can be emulated.

Really good game. It'd be a 9/10 if it wasn't impossible to trivialize the difficulty by simply playing the game naturally. I understand you can crank up enemy health to absurd degrees, but that's only post-paintress.
And at hard difficulty, I'm too trash at parrying to be able to handle how much more damage they do.
My best solution would be to include options right at the start of the game where you can disable getting bonus exp for taking no damage and maybe bump down exp rewards in general.

A lot. The English is peak "The translator didn't really know Japanese or English and just threw words into whatever documents he was given". Games and manga in general are much better in Japanese even if the translation is pretty good, but for something with a bad translation it's basically a completely different story.

i think its because japanese jrpg music relies heavily on melody, the kind you can pinpoint and hum, whereas in E33 its mostly grandiose sweeping chord changes. Tracks like Alicia and the main Lumiere theme have standout melodies and the Renoir battle theme but that's about it. The secret sauce in E33's music is its novelty as being closer to contemporary neo classical, it even got top 1 on billboards list. Listening to it feels like it's important, like it's more "prestige" than other video games because of its operatic vocals, thunderous pianos, and violins, but i can understand why those that listen for unique harmonic inventions may see through its flashy exterior.

I'm up to the second Axon or w/e and it's good but a little overhyped. The combat has enough depth, bit unbalanced but who cares, difficulty feels pretty fairly tuned so you can reasonably beat most bosses first go... Parrying keeps it engaging but admittedly i found the normal enemies a bit tedious to fight, they can have a lot of HP, so i pretty much ran through most of the dungeons so far
Premise is interesting and I thought the opening set it up very well but the reliance on a magic villain that can seemingly just show up wherever and kill everyone is a bit lame, and i don't really care for the characters except Gustave (lol)
So far I'm feeling it's like an 8/10 but it's fine. It reminds me of some old mid-budget JRPG with a mad premise you might get back in the day, like Shadow Hearts or something, only more French

It's a great game but I felt zero motivation to play it again after I finished it. Having to constantly micro-manage my pictos or whatever skill points/skills I had was laborious and tedious in the end-game. Also, most battles are literally the same loop, to the point that I could have a macro running and win in the first or second round most of the time.

The parrying in this game is legitimately harder than any From game. Holy fucking christ. Sound cues are really useless for the most part, unless I have insane audio delay.

It's fine. Good, even. But I can't fathom why it's gotten so much gushing praise. It's really no better than any other decent JRPG out there, and has some issues like delayed model loading/LOD pop-in, underdeveloped lore and boring characters. Combat can be fun, especially when using parry builds, but the Souls-style trial and error design can irk.

Just played this slop and holy hell, what an overhyped, cinematic diarrhea fest of a game—this thing is 70% cutscene, 20% walking down hallways, and maybe 10% actual "gameplay," and even that’s being generous; you're dropped into this world mid-melodrama with no clue who anyone is, but the game acts like you're supposed to be emotionally devastated that some chick is going to die somewhere and LE PAINTER or whatever lore dump nonsense the writers pulled out of their asses, and meanwhile the characters are crying, reminiscing about stuff the player never saw, as if we were part of some emotional journey that literally never happened—there’s zero build-up, zero context, just non-stop forced emotional weight with absolutely nothing to ground it, and the combat, which is the most cookie-cutter, scripted JRPG trash I’ve seen in years: you get into a fight, hit the weak point, boss powers up, another mid-battle cutscene, then you do the exact same loop for the next 40 hours with maybe some elemental modifiers sprinkled in to give the illusion of "depth," but it’s all just pressing buttons in the order the devs want while pretending it’s strategic, and the exploration is an absolute joke—corridor after corridor dressed up with shiny lighting and fake "choices" that all lead to dead ends with lore collectibales.

Basically how I felt. The realistic western character designs jarred really hard with the typical goofy JRPG tropes. I just didn't feel anything during the 'emotional' moments of the game, because I barely knew anything about the cast - and even after it ended, I still felt like I didn't know anything about them. Kinda boring, there is no tactical variance besides parry everything, buff/debuff/replenish AP, attack. Trash mobs all die in one rotation of aoe attacks. Weapon/picto upgrades are boring, usually you have a build tailored to a weapon or a picto, and even if you do find something stronger, it does not outperform your build. Example is Maelle with the sword that puts her in the pink stance immediately or Verso with that weapon that lets him AA for free. And I also felt a disconnect playing as Verso, the guy literally sneaks away during Old Lumiere. He was hiding so much shit that I didn't enjoy the game from his perspective.

Deep in Act 3, I enjoy the game and will definitely finish it, but I think it's a bit overrated. The big positives are the ost and some of the scenery and the gameplay is surprisingly fun for how simple it is. But I think the game suffers a lot from UE5 syndrome and how much it (presumably) relies on premade assets. At least that's the feeling I get from it, from all the invisible walls and the muddled/unfocused sense I get from the visual design.
It's like when I find a lovingly made porn comic that was made with AI. The creator might have spent a lot of time prompting and inpainting and even doing manual edits and maybe there are no obvious errors. But the creative soul is spread thin and a lot of elements feel generic. I'd rather have had traded less visual fidelity for the game being more handcrafted. The soundtrack and the story at least they had to make from scratch and that part's good.

This poster kills expeditioners. The audio cues, when available, are always the way to go and are standardized between fights/attacks. Yes, there is a specific timing associated with the different audio cues, but when you learn it you can kill certain enemies with your eyes closed.

i just got to what seems to be the finale in act 3 and i'm impressed they managed to explain everything very succinctly and clearly. i thought this was going to fall apart the moment they had to explain everything so i'm happy that it's actually the best part, but act 3 still feels like a xenogears disc 2 kind of thing

It's aggressively mediocre and carried entirely by Luminairé looking really cool and a fairly unique OST.
The story and interest in the world design fall apart after the prologue with few places looking as interesting as the city and the story utterly shits itself once the main twist is revealed as everything you would care about up to that point becomes utterly unimportant as the world must revolve around the painters despite them being incredibly boring.

Combat is the same, early on dodges and parries feeling so impactful is novel but general encounter design and frequency is at odds with this and the rest of the combat system fails to keep up as it feels pretty dry in comparison, once you break the damage cap it feels very much like there is a single correct way to play and a dozen worthless trap options. Mostly due to the skill limit of 6.

I'm convinced half the people who aggressively glaze this game and claim it is a masterpiece without peer never actually played it past act 2 and instead treat it as fans of earthbound games do. Something they claim to love and adore as a fashion statement.

Renoir and Verso were right. His side easily represents Christ. Life. Truth. The way. The women are wrong, save for Clea, because she was only ever motivated to honor her parents. Alicia and The Paintress are addicted to escapism (drugs). The constructs in the painting aren't real sadly there are those who deceive themselves into believing that having more empathy for something like an animal, for which we are meant to have dominion, over that of an actual human life is detestable and backward. Maelle is guaranteed a pointless, selfish death with hell as her eternity where she rendered Verso's sacrifice utterly meaningless and devastates her entire family but these people don't want to honor Verso or care about Renoir or the rest of the family. They forget that the original goal was getting the mother out of the canvas. Once it's time to get out since it's been established that the mother is the strongest in the family and WILL find a way to return, Alicia gets incredibly selfish and refuses to listen to reason.

It's even revealed that the last remnant of Verso's soul is tired and doesn't want to do this anymore. Alicia. Doesn't. Care. She just wants to stay in her candyland. Recall the beginning of the game. She actives craps on living in Lumiere. She truly doesn't sound like a fan of living there. But at the end she's crying for it. And that's sad because she doesn't believe in herself. Renoir flat out tells her that she can leave and recover her health and then return to the canvas later. She flat out refuses this truth.

There will be more women than men at the Great White Throne of Judgment. Maelle is the perfect reason why. She takes no accountability for her actions. She was supposed to be there to help her parents and honor her brother and in the end warped it all into her own pain. She didn't want to be accountable. Verso literally has to save Maelle's life twice because in grief she is massive idiot. She never would have released soul. That's evil.

I think it's more than that. Just as a big part of the story is about the relationship between the artist and their art, Aline and Alicia lost sight of what their true intentions were and we know that the both of them were the most responsible for Verso's death.
Symbolically, this is also why Real Renoir and Painted Verso end up doing the same thing: They would love to see things as it could be but prior experiences have taught them to see things as they are. The role of Painted Verso is to bring light back to the real family and dispel illusions that would drag the family into a premature death like the original did and it's not by coincidence that a Renoir and a Verso are involved in the ending of every Act.

Not even Aline would be able to keep Lumiere here without the kid Verso and that's the biggest issue: The thoughts, emotions and chroma that goes into Lumiere can't be supplemented by kid Verso so Aline either has to stay until she dies or she gets punted out and it vanishes in time.
That's why I think Aline originally just wanted a happy Verso to exist with his friends along with being free in a Lumiere of his own, the huge problem is that she was lying to herself in her art too and she wished for him to be alive, and we all know how that went once Renoir confronted her.

I played expert and did mostly parries. It wasn't CBT, it just wasn't fun difficulty. Dying a few times until I learned patterns was just kind of annoying. In Act 3, the first place I went was the Renoir's Drafts (before I even got cheater from Sprong) and I still cleared almost everything there on my first pass. Gimmick turn based game inputs combined with Elden Ring style feint windows is just annoying, not really hard.

Great game, fun gameplay, fantastic soundtrack. The problem with it is that it's far too easy to become overpowered. This makes the final boss fights rather anticlimactic. Also, a lot of the enemy attack animations are very long-winded because of all the feints that are meant to throw off your dodge/parry timing. The story is quite good, but the final chapter is a massive infodump and feels like the devs were running out of time.

If you're not a big fan of JRPGs, then sure. You'd probably think the best FF, DQ, Tales, BoF, Wild Arms, Suikoden, SMT and Chrono games are "okay at best" too.
Me, I love JRPGs, started in 1999 with Chrono Cross and still play a lot of both new and old ones. And E33 (as long as we even count it as a "J"RPG) is certainly the best made in the last 10-20 years.
Of those I played, of course. I've yet to try FF7R and Metaphor. Will probably get the latter later this year, but 7R only when all parts are out.

I kept seeing it pop up on my youtube feed, and eventually watched the launch trailer. Floored me, so I listened to Une Vie a T'aimer thirty times in a row, and bought the game the next day.
Loved it. The music was S tier, the three main characters (Gustave, Verso, Maelle) were awesome, the side characters were likable and charming (even that WHORE Sciel), and the art design was incredible. Flying Waters is so effortlessly, hypnotically beautiful.
I wish the endings weren't so sad, but what can you do. Renoir is a fucking man, I hope to love anything the way that man loves his family.

I couldn't like it, I really tried to since a LOT of people are constantly saying its the best thing ever apparently and even close friends told me that it was but I don't see the magic, for some reason nothing in this game surprised me at all. I thought the combat was a bit fun until act 2, after fighting so much shit it started showing the same issues that all turn based games show to me, they get insanely boring and repetitive, my deaths started feeling less like I messed up and more like I just didn't learn the pattern so I have to go fuck myself for like 2-3 tries until I beat whatever was on screen. I tried to keep going because of the story and how people said its just some amazing stuff but I'm the type of guy that can't really get interested in fictional worlds if I don't find the characters interesting, after Gustav died randomly in the middle of the story i could not find myself giving a single fuck about any of the characters on the screen, even after learning about Verso's tragic backstory and how Maelle is suffering I just couldn't find it in me to care about any of them, its a bit crazy since this if the first time I couldn't even complete a game that this many people say is good, I'm not even a contrarian or anything, most of the time a bunch of people like something I end up at least enjoying it a little bit but not this time

They updated it so you can buff enemy health, but they should really let you disable getting extra xp for taking no damage, or even lower the amount of xp you get in general.
On my second playthrough I used a mod that shows the level range of enemies in each area and since I was used to the enemies 9/10 times I got the 20% bonus and I was a good 5+ levels overleveled. And the more overleveled you get by taking no damage, the more likely you are to beat more enemies without taking damage.
I know there's a hard mode but I suck at parrying, especially vs bosses, and the enemies do huge damage. I could really use a difficulty level between medium and hard.

The game was fun for the first 4 or 5 hours, but holy fuck I got so annoyed with the formula. I would have preferred they made it just straight turn based instead.
