Bugs dodge the "soft, round shapes" flaw because bugs are angular and have clearly articulated limbs. Bugs dodge the "gaudy, unnatural colors" flaw because many real life bugs do exhibit vivid colors and patterning. And no matter how hard you try to make them marketable, a bug still looks like a bug for these two reasons. It's not a coincidence that two of the few exceptions to this
