The problem isn't that OC's exist. Its that overzealous writers will pass up using appropriate characters (you know, the characters that the fans of the series came to see) in favor of trying to leave their mark on the series by injecting their own derivative slop. Jokes aside, there have been cases where an oncoming writer truly did good work, or even better work when continuing a series. All too often it ends up being "hey, I continued that story you wrote, and here are my new characters. They are basically exactly the same as your characters, but younger and race swapped or something".
Naturally people are prone to being averse to new things like that due to skepticism, and disdain for change, but they hardly look like they were in the wrong when the infinite horde of lame forgettable OCs just piles up.

The problem is in stories involve fighting like Street Fighter or Darkstalkers, both groups of characters are considered abnormal im their respective fields.
But the line between OC overstepping things is sometimes a very thin line. Look at what Ken Penders cancerous shit did to the Archie series. Ian Flynn then made some of his own and a good majority of them were okay to me. Ken Penders however took it way too far. I don't know if you know the history with that guy but it got to the point where Archie wasn't dismissing anything Penders wrote. He wrote some really terrible stories and I am baffled to this day how he got away with so much.
He knew Archie wasn't going to stop him from literally anything at the point when Sonic and Image comic characters had a crossover and Penders used his own OC he was trying to pitch to Image as part of the crossover.
So really he was using Archie's platform to promote his own work and incorporate THAT character into Image's stuff lowkey.

But to take it a step further, I would say that even though I know that throwing shit at the wall was foundational to some stories and games, especially capeshit, I would still urge writers to stop digging so hard once they struck gold. Because throwing more shit on top of your happy accident can in fact simply bury it in shit. Again, I know this works for superheroes sometimes, but when it comes to a comic adaptation for an established IP, I would advise the writers to go very light on the OCs.
