How does this game compare to the other platforming greats? The level design and variety seems nice, but the movement looked really basic, even for a more level based platformer

The movement and physics felt good. It's like the kind of game that would be ideal for a 3D super mario maker-type game.

It rewards all styles of play from people searching over every inch, children who suck at video games, people looking to pull off skips and exploit mechanics, game design nerds who s0i face at nintendo doing a mario game where they have rule of 3's platforming, and guys who like playstation and know shit about video games. It doesn't have the artificial and retarded restrictions Nintendo puts in their games, it's not some low quality indie slop shartformer, it has excellent production values, fun music. Great enemy design, great and inventive level design that is constantly throwing new ideas at you at a pace you control instead of being forced to deal with nintendo bullshit where half the game is a tutorial.

And if you do need the baby steps it has that for you too.

>>716437462
It does look and run great. Loved the levels where as you're hitting the finish line you get showered in literally thousands of gems that are all dynamic physics objects and the controller has this sweet feedback for every one you touch. Game just feels great to play on a sense level.

is this game really that unremarkable on its own merits? I guess the game breeds that sort of response when its identity is playstation brand masturbation

As an actual person who plays videogames both astrobot & bananza are on the same level. But DK wins overall because of the finale.

Great game but not much to talk about other than it's competently designed with even pacing.

The movement isn’t an issue in Astro? It’s design philosophy and moveset reminds me of Galaxy, just with the spin being seperate from the double jump. I always thought Galaxy was weaker because of its dull movement. It does look faster than Galaxy, to be fair. But without the novel gravity mechanic.

What about it? If you're asking my opinion yeah astro is better technically, but I enjoyed the experience more in odyssey. If only because I liked finding the esoteric moons hidden everywhere. Astro had its moments tho, clever level design & satisfying game feel. They perfected the OLD Nintendo formula.

Which Nintendo has since developed a new formula seen in botw, smo, TotK, & DKB.

>esoteric moons hidden everywhere
>They perfected the OLD Nintendo formula
There are too many moons in Odyssey and too many bananas and shit in Bananza. They completely lose all their charm when they're fucking everywhere like that. Why would I give a fuck about going to collect shit when there's 999 and you find one around every corner? The replay value also completely takes a shit, and I get that it's supposed to not be an issue because there are soooo many fucking collectibles to find, but they lost everything that made them special.

By esoteric I'm talking about the ones where the only hint is the rumble of your controller as you comb the level. It's just fun to roam & always find something no matter how trivial, the large list of movement options helps too. Just a shame you never need to actually utilize them. Which is odyssey's biggest flaw; it's too easy.

Astrobot on the other hand actually uses the most out of his kit, (even if rather small and reserved for level specific gimmicks) I can the appreciate the the tightness of level design here more than Nintendo's modern, loose approach.

Astro has a very basic moveset but the levels and power-ups are fun. You definitely make use of them fully, and the challenge mode stages were pretty fun though not bullshit or anything like some people kept saying. Moderately challenging for what they’re supposed so some could take a few tries since they’re sorta speed-oriented and astro dies in one hit.
I haven’t touched the stages added post-launch, they’re probably fun. I’ve also played Bananza and I’d say it’s harder than Bananza but Bananza’s movement was a lot more fun. The bosses are better in Astro Bot except for two in Bananza.

I tried this for the first time in VR (Demo) just this week and I was pretty blown away. It wasn't groundbreaking, but it was pretty great in VR. Pancake, I can't say, might be fairly mid, like Gex or Spyro.

It's great, but its biggest issue is that it totally lacks any "meat" if that makes sense. Each stage is creative, visually beautiful, a lot of fun, and then it's over in 5 minutes and you've forgotten it completely by the next stage. It needed a bit more bite to the difficulty, or more content within stages, or a more sophisticated moveset to toy around with, or really just something to stick to the bones.

They're probably the most challenging ones they made for the game. Fun to go through and get the last batch of bots as well.

Yes it is. There is no skill ceiling with the platforming like in DK or Mario. I got the platinum for Astro, but I probably won't ever replay it. Games like 64, Sunshine, or Odyssey are more replayable due to the freedom of movement and amount of options for getting around levels.

Top-tier. I'd put it slightly below Odyssey and the Galaxy games, but it's definitely better in certain aspects.
My only real complaint is the movement's too simplistic, but it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment.

7/10 if more high quality platformers were being made in the modern age
9/10 compared to the sea of cinematic bullshit
The comparisons to Galaxy are somewhat correct but it's more like Forgotten Land in terms of how it handles collectibles and powerups.
Easily a good pickup for when you already have a PS5 or you're getting one for another game.Skills from other platfomers will also carry over since some mechanics are shared like pressing attack in midair to cover more distance
Play the side levels and the vicious void levels if you feel like the game is too easy
