That was before 0, there's an entire sweet spot of events between the end of zero and the first game that could focus on what exactly Kiryu did to almost receive his own family. It can even end right before Shinji picks up Kiryu to collect.

This series should have been an edgy crime drama. Remove the silly side content. Let Kiryu kill people. Don't turn Majima into a joke. Regularly kill off important characters.
Yakuza had so much potential, but they wasted it by making it so goofy.
