Why? Do you not think that the universe, being infinite and largely unknown, contains that which is unknowable to human intelligence? Is God itself not inherently unknowable? Even Christ was a manifestation of God brought down to human level and understanding, and His time is still debated now.

The 'expansion' of Reapers in 2 was fucking dogshit.
>we gather the sludge of an entire species and inexplicably build them into a giant approximation of the physical shape of the species, but then we pack it into an outer layer of cuttlefish anyway
2 was a retarded sidequest that destroyed any chance of the Reaper trilogy having a good story, and it got away with it by having a fun action movie approach and a good cast of characters.

In the first game they are meant to be cosmic horrors from outside of the known galaxy that devour all life every cycle. The Geth an AI race worship them.

In the second game they are saturday morning cartoon villains and have henchmen now who are bugs for some reason. Oh and they are making a human reaper because... you know... some reason.

In the third game the reapers are AI ships and can be easily killed. They're boring space ships and get their shit pushed in. What you thought they were cosmic horrors? Nah that got retconned. Oh you thought it didn't. No it did. Because the writers literally said on the Bioware forums they didn't have any clue how to kill them if they stuck to the original ideas they had for them.

Oh and the game went through several writers all who shat on the last writer.

Not understood and unknowable are two different concepts. Lovecraft's work was written at a time when people legitimately thought that if they saw a train in a movie, that it would possibly jump out of the screen at them. The idea of the unknowable (fiction) is far more interesting than contemplating what is actually unknowable (nothing).

The Reapers are just cheap knockoffs of the Inhibitors from Revelation Space, who are the remnants of the only major galactic war and suppress spacefaring life for equally idiotic reasons and are circumvented, not defeated, by the same kind of deus ex machina. The Blight from A Fire Upon the Deep is also defeated in the exact same manner as the Reapers. Novels from the early 90s and 00s.

But also, it's a microcosm of the overall lore. This is like saying Twilight Zone was a failure because of a focus on individuals in some cases rather than the overarching powers involved in the series.

They only make a single capital-class Reaper every 50,000 years. We're not talking the replicators where all it takes is one and you're boned.

Also, they probably make more than one destroyer each cycle, but those are bad jokes and can be destroyed fairly easily.
