Look... It's a really good game, yes, but you oversold it to me, /v/.
A lot of the level design is very questionable, most of the difficulty I had with this game was knowing where to go next in certain missions, rather than combat. And I beat final boss Vergil on my first try... Maybe I shouldn't have used Beowulf, what an OP weapon.
I liked DMC1 better overall, and yet neither come close to Bayonetta. I was told dmc3 would make me prefer it over it. Nah.
Should I play DMC4?

if you compare it to bayonetta then DMC4 won't cut it neither but shoot I'd say you can still give it a shot if you can get it cheap.
but I have no idea how the game really looks without seeing it through rose tinted glasses.

DMC's difficulty is entirely up to you. Even DMD can be trivialized if you get good enough. The difference is that it has basically no ceiling to what you can do; the only limitation being your imagination and dexterity.
Since most gamers have neither, the case being even more true in /v/, they don't even begin to scratch what the game has to offer.
