Why don't they *feel* retro despite being 20 years old?
Anonymous No.716438873 [Report]
Because games have stagnated since then.

That gen was weird because despite being pretty good and possibly the last good gen it's most directly responsible for the downfall of gaming we currently see
Anonymous No.716439740 [Report]
>>716438773 (OP)
Because those consoles started the diminished return era.
The never ending arms race of specfag pissing contests, when the consensus shifted from "how fun is it?" to "how many terraflops, and does it even fucking support 1440?"
Shit like that and much more is why I'll never waiver from my deepest belief that the previous gen was the last true great gen, ESPECIALLY for gamers

The ps2s success with casuals shifted focus from studios from kids/gamers to normalfags. That is the era games became easier, and narratively driven games started to take off off -- so they doubled down on it in the ps3 / 360 era.

You could say that the 360 kinda convinced sony to back away from overtly japanese games, and nintendos success with the wii and games like new smb basically is the reason they make underpowered shit boxes now and the mario games are generally pretty sterile and samey

But... nintendo made the wii because the gamecube flopped, and the 360 exists because microsft was able to nudge into the console market because of the combined failures of nintendo and sega.

Ps360 aesthetics are pretty different. The consoles made a lot of bold choices visually like the decision to go with gloss, and colorful lights and the fucking spiderman font. And the games were filled with uglified face scans. No corner cutting with ue5 and a credits list full of jeet names.

I argue it's because the PS3/360 made internet connection mandatory.

The last generation was still plug and play even though Dreamcast was the first to introduce online gaming. But you could still survive without it.

PS3/360 required you to download updates and there was even famous shit like Capcom forcing DLC onto a disc meaning it was impossible to play as certain characters unless you paid even more money online to unlock them.

This, and so much more. Internet went from a enhancing carrot to a stick painted like a carrot
The worst part is consumers are so conditioned, or that it's all they know, that they think modern internet functionality in gaming is almost entirely positive, with no virtual harm

If you try to buy a ps2 used and it comes with games its usually some combination of gta, a shooter, a driver, and some kind of annual sports slop. Not that gta sucks or anything, but its like a lowest common denominator game.

1) they run in high def
2) controllers haven't changed since then
3) game design hasn't changed since then
There's been complete and utter stagnation in the industry since 2007.

They say things like "now you can just update (insert fighter), you dont have to buy a new version!" As if thats a good thing. If i prefer the way the game used to be or want to revisit it, or if i just want to discuss the old version of those games now its much harder. Hate this season whatever version 1. whatever the fuck shit, it blows ass.

Well, what I mean is we as a culture have reached a peak aesthetic with the 7th gen of consoles and everything after it is either a sidegrade or a straight downgrade.

No they didn't. You could play these consoles perfectly fine without connection.
I paid for Live for a couple months around when Halo 3 came out. Never went online after that.
As for whey they aren't retro, probably because they literally aren't. PS5's big exclusive launch title was a 1:1 PS3 game now in high resolution. GTA 5 (a 360 game) is getting its replacement this year.
Anonymous No.716446979 [Report]
Game development is so long, that we havent gotten sequels to 7th gen games just updates. There havent been any actual new games since then. So of course they dont feel retro. The newest gta is v, the newest elder scrolls is still skyrim, people are still playing minecraft.

Gen 7 established the modern paradigm of games to this day. There's been no real revolutionary development in how games play since then nor how we interface with consoles.

because you're old. in the 2030s-2040s gen alpha will be saying the same exact shit about PS5 and Switch2

I'd say that's a good thing. I wouldn't want it to be PS3 only like MGS4.
Anonymous No.716448762 [Report]
Anything with constant connectivity and a friends list and shit is going to feel inherently modern.

PS2 online didn't have a friends list or a singular account or anything and while Xbox invented the "Gamertag" it wasn't something you really throught about heavily unless you were playing online. And both of these consoles are no longer online.

If the PS3 and 360 go offline it'll be interesting to see how it goes. No patches or updates or anything. I'm sure it'll feel retro (and be annoying to use) then.
