The games were Japanese exclusives that declined massively in quality after the sequel to the first game focused more on the drama management and gameplay aspects than the cute girls and stories, setting the series back forever.
That said it's kind of a shame Namco died before they could take the series any further, An Ace Combat 3 tier Idolm@ster would have been too good for this world.
That said it's a massive shame even the old games were DLC traps with online elements.

The topic of this series being unsellable in the west always reminds me of two things:

Yes there was some mildly suggestive stuff early in the first game but the franchise only has one canon romance and it's subtle. The other 'idol' romances involve characters who are literally moms like Ai Hidaka’s mother or Kotori’s
The series is really just a collection of well-written stories with a unique cast of characters so there’s someone for everyone to connect with, the songs are also an extra side dish
