I think he's trying to say that keeping people on a development team, with organizational knowledge/memory specific to that IP or franchise, isn't worth it, because you can spin up a brand new video game IP and outsell franchises with decades of history, such as Doom, Star Wars, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed, etc.

He's not exactly wrong, but it sounds like some degree of cope. GTA 6 will sell a bazillion units on day one because it's the GTA franchise.

He basically says that they've ruined all their franchises by pimping them out to absolute idiots (but with the correct agenda) which has made once guaranteed hit titles be flops over and over again. The videogame industry is a lot like wrestling though, with probably hundreds of thousands of people desperate to break in who they can pay below market rate and see if this new crop of talent can make anything good from the ash that the old guard left in their woke wake.

>the enigma of success in an industry that has no franchise value
If I am reading this correctly, he is saying that success is an unknown factor for video games even if it has a franchise name attached to it, which is a "no shit". It doesn't matter what IP a game is attached to if it is at least a good game.
The thing that shits me off about the quote though is that it has the presumption that Microsoft has been treating its' franchises correctly, which is fucking laughable.

it's just corporate speak, it doesn't mean anything

>I also want to acknowledge the uncertainty and seeming incongruence of the times we're in. By every objective measure, Microsoft is thrivingโ€”our market performance, strategic positioning, and growth all point up and to the right. We're investing more in CapEx than ever before. Our overall headcount is relatively unchanged, and some of the talent and expertise in our industry and at Microsoft is being recognized and rewarded at levels never seen before. And yet, at the same time, we've undergone layoffs.
>This is the enigma of success in an industry that has no franchise value. Progress isn't linear. It's dynamic, sometimes dissonant, and always demanding. But it's also a new opportunity for us to shape, lead through, and have greater impact than ever before.
>The success we want to achieve will be defined by our ability to go through this difficult process of "unlearning" and "learning." It requires us to meet changing customer needs, by continuing to maintain and scale our current business, while also creating new categories with new business models and a new production function. This is inherently hard, and few companies can do both.

Part of me wonders how out of touch a person can be? Like at what point do you say โ€œmy info is bad maybe I should go see for myself?โ€. Like Iโ€™m genuinely curious as to who feeds them info? Like what soulless/retarded analyst spends all their time finding the most inaccurate and misleading metrics to feed these suits? I mean do any of them actually know why people like the games from the franchises they bought? Like even if the opinions vary at large there has to be some common factor that they can create a pattern from? They say success is impossible to gauge yet they covet companies like nintendo who have maintained a hyper successful company by being able to gauge it. This is a weird admission that their leadership is clueless and that they do not belong in the game industry. Their leadership seems incompetent on such a fundamental level that they openly admit they lack vision and can only make money by abusing and shittifying obvious, existing sources of revenue.

I feel we aren't that far off from stock market AI dictating the actions of CEO's where the machine will advise them to make ridiculous decisions like firing 90% of its staff and buying 50 ukranian nuclear powerplants only to sell them the next day and buy an African diamond mine because its making predictions nobody understands but do actually make the green line go up.

These CEO's are already abstract, parasitic decision makers who care about nothing besides parking money in the right spot.
