I heard 8bitdo’s QC has fallen off a cliff recently, but I got my controller years before people started saying that, so I can’t verify it. If I were to buy any controller right now, it’d probably be the KK Pro 3.

i tried 8bitdos ultimate 2 or whatever recently and i found it to be pretty bad. not QC wise, seemd well-built, but the form factor was bad. i have small hands but that controller was even smaller than the switch pro controller, my thumbs way overshot the face buttons and it was awkward getting to the right stick, the back paddles are in the way and super soft so you just actuate them constantly on accident.

the dpad was nice, but it was also incredibly stiff, idk if it softens up over time but if not it would be exhausting to use.

i like the little third button they sneak up by the triggers and bumper, thats a really good idea, they should do just that instead of the shitty paddle button layout they have

It's been off a cliff for a decade, but I don't think any chink brand has QC to begin with. Plenty of complaints over the years about 8Bitdo, Gamesir, Flydigi, Mobapad, PXN, Machenike, etc. that aren't the standard experience.

8bitdo ultimate wired, have used this for thousands of hours by now.
One of the dpad directions has double presses sometimes but every other button still functions and the sticks are flawless still.
I got a wireless one before this and the right stick got messed up, causing it to hang on the right. Not exactly drift, it just got loose.
This ones lasted far longer.
Dont like how the rubbers coming off though, will need to take care of that.

Idk ESL bro. I have owned many 8bitdo controllers and the only ones with a shit dpad were the early 8bitdo sn30 pro controllers, and only the Nintendo style dpads had that issue. I've had a pro plus from before they introduced the pro 2 and I never had false diagonals like any of the earlier models

If you are pressing down/up on a controller and you switch directions quickly you might accidentally hit a diagonal unintentionally if your dpad is shit.
One good example of this in a game is in contra. If you hold down to crouch and wiggle the dpad left and right. If you lose the crouch and start moving your dpad is shit because the diagonals are too easy to hit on accident

Unrelated but I have an original sega genesis controller that has a couple of millimeter off center punch where the dpad rocks over the ball bearing in the dpad and does this shit, wtf sega. My other controller does not do this. Sign of bad qc
Anonymous No.716466742 [Report]
>>716466556
Another way you can test this is play tetris. Most tetris versions pressing down instantly drops the block, so if your dpad is shit and unreliable rocking left and right you'll end up fucking up and dropping it.

QC wasn't the best when it first released. Its gotten better but I wouldn't be too surprised if one of your triggers required slightly more force than the other.
There's also no pivot in the dpad. You can modify it in yourself if you want but if you hate non pivot dpads you'll hate it.
I've used mine to do decently well in bullet hells so its functional enough.
The genesis variant is the same shit with a different shape. If you've got long fingers it may be uncomfortable.

IMO its a serviceable controller but nothing special.

shit shmuplets worry about. it just means how easy it is to hit a diagonal or sensitivity to them. in shmups you want an easy diagonal so sensitive diagonals are a good thing to you. if you're playing a game that never wants to hit diagonals its bad if it's sensitive. I don't like any nintendo style crosspads because they're really locked in compared to floating sega pads. I have an 8bitdo wireless 2 and it takes too much effort for me to hit a diagonal on it compared to a floating pad. Not a big deal though, I only use it for 3D games for 2D games I use a joystick.

You don't actually press left and right, it's a test to see if your controller is consistent at holding a direction. I was playing dkc 2 today and there's a section where I wanted to fly straight up, holding up to go precisely straight, if the controller is shit holding up you'd get some play that could fuck up your precision movement.

>>716466958
Like anon said it is good in shmups, also fighting games to consistently do movements. In platformers or puzzle games you'd want it to be difficult to accidentally hit diagonals

I modded mine with a seimitsu stick and buttons and it's great. Unfortunately the stick didn't fit standard so I had to screw it in under the acrylic and the seimitsu buttons fit tight as fuck so cleaning it is going to be amazing. Prying out the tight as shit buttons to remove the acrylic, looking forward to it.

8bitdo's actual QC is as good as it ever was, which is to say the misses are rare enough you're pretty much never gonna hear about them outside of Reddit threads and the five hundred millionth retard in a controller thread yammering about the d-pad of the SN30 Pro back when it still had a SNES design. For reference, enough people squeal about 8bitdo on /v/ being the work of shills that some Chinese derived nicknames for 8bitdo are now on the auto-spam filter

That being said, 8bitdo still produces rubber membrane d-pads that feel good but have strange diagonals that are fixable (not that you should be fixing an out-of-the-box product, mind). I haven't used any of their Ultimate controllers or the upcoming Pro 3 that have Vita styled dome switch-under-rubber membrane d-pads so I can't say anything on those. Everything else on 8bitdo controllers is rock solid, hall effect works great, battery life is still good even with hall sticks being power hungrier, buttons feel good, only problem is Pro 2 has some input latency but it's still not enough you're ever gonna notice it unless you're a weird motherfucker playing fightan games with a Playstation layout controller.

Most recently some of the more recent 8bitdo controllers now support Steam Input over Dinput for full controller functionality.

Been using the same DS3 since '08. Really is a great controller. My personal favorite.
-Better build quality than the PS4 controller
-No share button
-Rechargeable
-Start and Select buttons instead of "options"
-No silly track pad
-Rumble
-Not wired like DS2
-Symmetrical layout
-Works on PC with bluetooth and a third party app. No dongle.
-Thumbsticks made out of dog noses, no drift even all these years later
-Came with USB
-Pressure sensitive R2 + L2 buttons
Only complaint I hear about it is the D-Pad isn't "clicky" enough because it's one solid piece instead of 4 seperate buttons, but I've never found that to be an issue.
One thing I personally find annoying, most PC games don't detect it as a PlayStation controller, it has to use Xinput. It can be harrowing trying to find playstation glyphs for PC games and mostly they don't exist, you're stuck using Xbox inputs.
Also worth mentioning, if you're going to buy one make sure it's a dualshock (DS3) and not a sixaxis. The sixaxis is the original PS3 controller and it doesn't have rumble. Sixaxis was a motion control gimmick that almost no games used. Very few games had parts where you had to tilt or shake the controller almost like a wiimote without a pointer. It's basically useless but DS3 still has it.

ALL 2D games play better on stick. Even platformers. The only reason old school controllers used a dpad instead of an arcade style joystick was because of cost

Nor do I, personally, and this is on a mushy 8bitdo Pro 2 d-pad. No issues in Mega Man, Castlevania or Contra where it's actually pretty important I have control over where I'm gonna end up or what I'm currently doing. "Contra test" as Mr. Grab A Drink And Snack likes to do is a really bad way of actually measuring how a d-pad works in real gameplay, being as you're never going to be gorilla pawing Right on the pad at the same time as you're ducking.

Hall effect sticks do what they say they will, depending on the quality of the actual stick (PS Vita sticks were hall effect and still drifted because Sony's parts were garbage). Virtually any hall effect stick you can find will be acceptable quality these days.

TMR sticks are better on battery life for wireless controllers and have higher resolution, meaning they'll behave more like an ALPS potentiometer joystick. If you have an option then pick TMR.

Maybe I'm just a shitter, but I never could do combos with stick as it would hold direction I wasn't holding, sometimes it would get stuck in one direction and you had to move it with your thumb to unstuck.
Games like Sekiro are fine, but in DMC and fighting games I felt like it was gimping me. I dislike controllers in general desu, Dark Souls, ER, Nine Sols, AC6 etc, all completed on KBM, if I can, I will do that, if I feel like KBM is gimping me, like Sekiro, then I'll switch.

I've tested both. 8bitdo seem to have an unhealthy obsession with smaller sized controllers and completely vertical grips. It's the same problem I had with the Nintendo Switch Pro controller, they're not built for large hands and put me in pretty bad pain after just an hour of using them. Their back buttons are also placed in the most dogshit positions imaginable. GameSAAR overall is far more ergonomic both in general hand-feel and button placement, but wirelessly connecting to your PC can be a complete crapshoot because the driver support is fucking abysmal, not least of which being there are two different desktop apps both supporting differing controllers. My Tarantula is connected via cable, only way I could get it to work despite everything on my PC being wireless and having zero issues.

Looking forward to the Pro 3 since I don't think the previous ones had 2.4g connection. I like the swappable buttons gimmick too. Lack of easily replacable battery is a shame though

I love mine but I just have a couple of gripes that would make it literally perfect.

I had 2 of those, one wirereless and another one wired. The wireless one got fried after a few months of use. Like the dongle was literally fried and was stuck permanently receiving certain inputs that the controller wasnt pressing.
The wired one also worked for only a few months then the left analog stick started to throw me off cliffs in games because it would detect completely wrong inputs for a single frame. Like, as you go fron 0 to forward for a microsecond it would detect full-right which would move you to the right, shit like that. I disassembled it to see what was going on inside and much to my horror the insides were barely held together, cheap as fuck, and something (i dont remember what) got ripped off in the process and i couldnt solder it back together (only time this has happened to me).
So yeah they're rancid dogshit, pretty much disposable ewaste after a bit of use, shame too because they even got pressure sensitive buttons and shit.
I also have an unrelated powerA android phone controller and it's fantastic, i camt use it anymore necause its old as fuck and it just cant connect to modern phones, but that one feels super good to use and is still in good conition. I dont know why this brand has such a chasm in quality between products

I'm curious about the Analog / Digital trigger mode switch.
When you're in Digital does it have some sort of click when pressed down? Or does it just limit the ability to puss down the trigger with no extra feedback?

You can dim it. Even turn it to 0% so it turns off. I run it at 10% and it's perfect for my eyes. I give it colors similar to playstation controller's button
