SOME remakes stand on their own or surpass the original in a way that is just as inspired if not moreso. Like the remake of the original Resident Evil. The background designer approached each room with a specific goal to make it as beautiful as possible.

remakes can stand on their own, but that rarely happens outside of the fringe 1% of cases. the RE1 remake is an extremely unique remake and not indicative of most modern remakes.
the RE1 remake was only released 8 years after the original, and most of the higher up staff carried over to it (Jun Takeuchi, Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Shinji Mikami to name a few.).
most remakes are so far removed from the original devs that they should never be replacements of the originals.

OG RE fan here

Remake fixed everything I wanted in an RE4 game. The tone is seriously like it always should have been. Krauser's knife fight is actually fun, Ada DLC is great and i replayed the fuck out of it.
