Those “emulators” don’t work. You don’t own games on Steam because you sign the contract saying so, you don’t have legal protection against lawsuits by Valve. SteamOS is not open source, you are not escaping the Microsoft, Google and Facebook tracking, you’re allowing Valve to profit from you.

There is never a reason to buy the Steam Deck.

To download Nintendo emulators and illegally download games, then make a post on /v/ showing how brown you are playing Super Mario Odyssey at 15 fps. Then upload another image of your 2 inch 'ecker on the 'ecker

Well for me the track pads are great for either PC games that use a mouse, for precise aiming for any FPS and the desktop mode.
Really it's gonna depend on what games you want to play. The extra horsepower is nice and if you stick with Windows you can play the shit that usually gets blocked by anti-cheats.

they certainly do.

t. just finished another playthrough of demon's souls last month

>You don’t own games on Steam because you sign the contract saying so
in practice this doesn't matter because you can just crack your games

>you are not escaping the Microsoft
you certainly are, it is the entire reason valve has poured over a decade of effort and resources into linux, and even if it wasn't true, the bootloader is open so you could install any distro you wanted instead of steamos.

>you’re allowing Valve to profit from you.
as you are with any company you buy a product from, and this one lets me do whatever I want with the hardware I buy unlike console manufacturers

The greatest thing about the deck hands down is the quick resume feature.
You have to download a shit 3rd party program on the ally to get quick resume and even than it's janky and or dosent work without alot of pc games. Picking up the deck for a quick 15 mins is great.

I've played games all the way from the sega consoles up to the switch on my steam deck and all of them worked flawlessly, the only emulator I havent tried is rpcs3. Although desu the only emulator you might need is the ps2 one, its library is just that good.

No, I think steam is about to release their inner le happy merchant side.

They will make emulation on the steam deck next to impossible.

I think you should just buy a midrange PC and call it a day.

Mario kart world and donkey Kong bananza has shown us that Nintendo is mediocre now. Not to mention Metroid prime 4 lost most of its hyper after the gameplay reveal.

The only thing that can save Nintendo now is a remake of a 3d Zelda game.

My guess is that Twilight princess would be the easiest.

Emulation. It's still a perfectly valid machine.

Switch 1. Most of it emulates fine, and at this point I'd probably recommend it over getting/hacking a Switch 1. DO NOT buy Switch 2 purely to play Switch 1.

PC Games. Obviously it won't play a lot of the new shit, but There's probably multitudes of games you haven't played. Steam Deck is a good way to do it, and some games like Switch 1 it is nice to play on a handheld. Also while you can buy them, piracy if you don't care means you won't need to pay a penny.

Steam Deck has more powerful alternatives and is pretty old, but that can also mean cheaper (Don't be afraid of buying second hand), and unless there are a few modern PC games you REALLY want in handheld then I wouldn't really recommend them at this point. They'll only become relevant if Switch 2 ever gets emulated.

There was never any reason to buy a Steam Deck.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

The deck is pricey but not pointless at all.
It still plays just about 99% of games that exist without much trouble. It's as versatile and open as it gets for a handheld. I can directly make a game myself and test it there without a problem. It has every input gimmick under the sun that people would want to utilize, and it can last many hours on battery with games that run on toasters, making it more worth it as a handheld.
In comparison to other handhelds the pricing isn't that ridiculous in any case. You want an OLED display you will have to spend a few more hundred on a Legion Go 2. You want the same price, the normal ROG Ally is your only option, and it sacrifices almost everything good for that bit of extra performance.
