Because it was a launch title and the scope of successful handheld devices prior to it was fucking Game & Watch toys, Mario Land was huge by comparison.

Land was widely acknowledged to be the weakest mainline Mario entry. Now Mario Odyssey, Mario 3d world, and Mario wonder are all far worse. At least according to the beaner kids of /v/

I don't know how anyone plays Land 1 and thinks it lands anywhere but last place in the series. It has good music and I like the unusual enemies/stage themes, but the physics are the most ass Mario has ever controlled. Ranking this anywhere high is genuine pure nostalgia and I played and beat this game multiple times on a gameboy during car rides as a kid.

The Game Boy was effectively new and SML came out at the end of the 80's, SMB1 only came out four years ago at the time. For contemporaries, compare to SML2 (1992), Wario Land and the Donkey Kong remake (1994), the Wario Land sequels since the GBC, and SMB Deluxe (1999).

This is the game that made me realize how absolute shit the gb screen, mario starts running and everything turns into a blur.
I'm guessing that's why Land 2 was slower in comparison.

There wasn't much else to play at the time, and the world was a different place in 1989. It was a horrible time really, I was actually forced to interact with people like you in person. Thank God that's no longer a requirement.

A functional Mario platformer on a handheld device in the mid-late 80s was insane. It's one of the weaker Mario platformers outside of some nice music and the fun of the bouncing ball powerup in some rooms but it was a really solid showcase of the GameBoy.

Land 2 obliterates it in quality but you'd hope it would if there's years of understanding the hardware better.

My friend and I had the Mega Man 2 rap memorized in like 8th-9th grade. That said it was clearly a flash in the pan with both guys going solo with weaker material than they had together before I had even finished high school and trying to cling to those golden years.
