Worse than mediocre, their programming skills are shocking, Elden Ring runs off the same god damn engine they'd been using for 13 years prior and it was constantly breaking. It feels like discourse warps around all of their games post 2009. I find that while fanboys and detractors exist for every game the discourse at least feels honest. With Fromsoft because the praise largely stems from how difficult they are and how only elite gamurs can beat them the difficulty elitists completely took over and made it impossible to discuss anything else. You see other games with a few bugs and glitches get blown up to HOLY SHIT BLUNDER OF THE CENTURY status yet I see this in every god damn Souls game and I wonder if I'm playing the same game as everyone else. It feels like a cult, they repeat the same mantras over and over. It's just insufferable. I like the games generally but I just wish they would at least be honest about how technically shit they are. They can never be just ok, no they have to be PERFECT 10/10 DEVELOPERS otherwise I wasted my life playing the same game over and over for nothing. I dunno, it's just weird.

Demon's Souls got big back in 2009 because it came out at exactly the right time when people were really starting to bitch about how easy games were getting. If it came out during the 90's-2000s it would have faded into as much obscurity as King's Field, Evergrace and all of their other obscure franchises.

After Dark Souls people just kind of forgot FromSoft was(is?) primarily a shovelware company. Like people complain about every Souls game being the same, but releasing the same game over and over again has been their business strategy since the 90s.

I'm 35 and I never understood how Demon's Souls or Dark Souls gained the traction it did. Most other games were more challenging than it in difficult modes. I never really find anything remarkable about cheesing a boss fight and putting no focus on anything while playing them. I found the NES game of yester years more challenging and in depth but I thought we evolved past that.

The thing about Souls is that the difficulty feels almost NESlike except obviously way easier because you can level up and summon and save and shit. If you get past the difficulty the games are incredibly short, especially DS1.
