for example: i believe it was in TR legend, if you use some mod tools to fly around the level you can actually see a model of classic lara from the previous game buried in a literal grave area in one of the levels - THAT'S the level of subtlety and that kind of thing happens sporadically throughout their games if you pay enough attention
obviously not all the devs hate classic lara because i've seen interviews where they spoke about how lara is inspiring and how it motivated them to go to the gym and that kind of stuff so it seems like there's almost a tug-of-war scenario going on within the team between people who want to create a new character out of lara and people who want to keep lara as is and it seems like that situation has exploded now and they don't know what the hell to do anymore

They got lazy with the PC versions after the first game which is somewhat understandable given the amount of work needed to engineer for the highly stratified PC/GPU market at the time. Developing for a static platform like the PS1 was easier so among other things the PS1 games got an improved lighting model from TR3 onwards. It's super obvious on levels like London which on the OG PC version looks like your in the level editor compared to the PS1 version. Prior to the remasters I preferred to play the PS1 versions of 3-5 (though I basically never play 5) upscaled and with texture alignment fixes over the PC versions for that reason.
