They're alright
The last one I played was "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream" and that was pretty enjoyable other than all the times I got stuck

this genre is probably the only one where watching somebody play the game is more pleasurable than playing it yourself
90% of puzzles in point and clicks are just
>use the carubretor cleaner on the rotting cow bladder :D
>talk to this one npc 9 times (his dialog doesn't change the first 8 times) :D
>guess the exact object the dev was thinking about while making this puzzle (it was a provolone sandwich) :D
yea fuck off

I think newer ones are mindful of that but then they usually stray more into walking sim territory too.
(I guess which is why I enjoy walking sim type games if I'm in the mood)

It's not a true point and click without at least one completely unintuitive puzzle/interaction

Yeah they are pretty neat.

I prefer first-person ones like Myst.
I beat the entire Dark Fall Trilogy using hints only on the second game because it was way to big and confusing to backtrack in.
Nothing beats the satisfaction of finishing a difficult game all by myself (or at least mostly) and gazing back at my schizophrenic notes afterwards.

not to harp on point'n'clicks too much because i geniuenly think they are an underappreciated genre, if not just for the stories they sometimes tell (point'n'clicks have THE best stories in gaming and that is an objective fact)...
but i find it funny how one of the biggest qol improvements modern point'n'clicks have adopted is the ability to highlight interactive points. a mechanic which outright removes of the very few gameplay elements those games have and brings them much closer to something like visual novels (which sit on the border of videogames and literature).

I'm in favor of the cursor changing when it's over an interactive object . I hate when games don't do that and they ALSO have unintuitive interactives like fucking hidden buttons in the wall. If they just wouldn't include crap like that and they use common sense to design levels I don't necessarily need to know what's clickable or not.

I played the Zero Punctuation guy's point and click games years ago and they were pretty fun.

I like the thing in point and clicks where you can just totally fuck up your file by doing some innocuous thing early game

Is golden idol good? the artstyle is dogshit but the gameplay piqued my interest

yep
solutions to puzzles should be deducable for the player using either real world or game world logic (which should always be consistent throughout the whole game) and key items should never blend in with the friggin background, it doesn't make the game "oldskool hardcore difficult" it just makes is tedious...

>is golden idol good?
yes, especially the first one. the puzzles are fun and there's an AMAZING flow to the background plot. there is just a big difficulty jump from case 2 to case 3. i almost quit the game because of it, boy i'm glad i didn't
>artstyle is dogshit
how can your taste be so bad

I played Broken Age a few years ago after getting it in one of those charity bundles.
Something about it made me feel dead inside and I can't quite put my finger on it.

I do but if I need to too often that isn't playing the game and if the solution is bullshit it's worse.

>>716486778
I needed a guide too often so I accepted I wasn't creative enough to play this game. I played it via family sharing so I didn't lose anything except time.

Solving a scenario feels good but sometimes I feel insufficient information is present to make definitive conclusions so I need to guess, though there's usually enough to narrow down possibilities and it says when you're close.

I do. It's a shame there's no good ones since Lucasarts and Sierra closed.

I really liked Grim Fandango, tried Sam and Max right after and didn't like it so I never bothered trying anything else
Anonymous No.716491187 [Report]

I really don't, but Machinarium and Grim Fandango are so accessible and entertaining that even a brainlet like me had fun with them without having to look up a walkthrough.
