Super Mario World was much easier because it was designed with a save file which effectively gives you infinite continues. The save file doesn't market games to only children, but to journalists, casuals, and people who suck at games in general. The lowest common denominator, basically. That's why they became a staple. It might be easier than Crash but most games are. And SM64 might be the only 3d Mario game that's more difficult than Bananza and even then it's not by a significant margin.

Enemies and bosses might die fairly quickly when you play correctly. But when you aren't, both enemies and environments deal significant damage and in the latter half of the game you will die in one or two hits unless you upgrade your hearts a ton.
But the game also does not give you a lot of iframes upon being hit and will gladly chain damage onto you in rapid succession if you land on a hazard or become the target of multiple attacks.

The game also has some pretty tight challenges. Especially the ones at the end and post game.
Acting like the game is Odyssey tier easy or easier is just ridiculous and nothing an honest man would say.

FLUDD is a huge crutch. FLUDD might allow for cool tricks but it also saves you from making dumb mistakes. But even in the challenges without FLUDD, being able to stop or turn on a dime compared to your movement in Mario 64 still makes the game a lot easier than it.
