Is this game worth it over Age of Calamity or waiting for the new Age of Imprisonment? The art style is nostalgic for me. I have never played any of the Hyrule Warriors, and I also do not like the look or lore of nu-zelda.
But is the game worth the $60 in comparison to the other options, and how does it run on the Switch 2 for you? I mainly play docked.

I'd say it's worth it, yeah.
Game has a fuckload of stuff to do, easily hundreds of hours of playtime if you go completionist.
On the Switch 2 it runs locked 1080/60 docked as far as what I tested. It also runs at 1080 on handheld which is neat.

Buy the original on the Wii U. The Switch game is poorly optimized and has a memory leak. The extra shit isn't worth it, but I remember that the Wii U DLC is gone now, so I'd recommend you emulate the Wii U game. Be aware of the excessive padding.

Compared to the Wii U version, the Switch one has all the 3DS content, which is like 10 different characters, the Wind Waker and Linkle stories, and a couple extra adventure maps.
It essentially doubles the amount of shit to do in the game.

I got the characters and the extra story stuff didn't wow me. Linkle also sucks shit so I had no reason to buy the 3DS and Switch games and I had my fill after the Master Quest adventure map. With the Wii U eshop being dead, you more or less have to play the Switch game and by the time it released, I was pretty much burned out on the game.

AoC and AoL really piss me off, because I wanted a proper sequel with more games represented.

Legitimately no idea what you people mean by the memory leak, and that's with me having over 200 hours in the game.
I know that the game had the 1080 handheld bug that never got addressed, which eventually got turned into a plus when playing it on the Switch 2.

After a few hours, the game starts showing graphical and lighting glitches and eventually it crashes after you leave a level or even start a level. This issue wasn't present in the Wii U game, so for anyone who wants to pick up the Switch game, it can be a dealbreaker and shows how rushed of a port it was. You shouldn't have to turn off the game to 'fix' the problem. That's coping.

Now if the issue is 'fixed' on the Switch 2, fine and well. But do you want to buy a whole new console for a game released eight years ago?

The memory leak is real though but just restart it once a day to avoid the game crashing randomly on you at a terrible time. Put it on your wishlist and wait for a sale

>Is this game worth it over Age of Calamity or waiting for the new Age of Imprisonment?
Obviously we don't know about Age of Imprisonment yet since it's not out, but there are many people who think that the original Hyrule Warriors is better than Age of Calamity, and I'm one of them. They're also surprisingly different games in that the characters are obviously different and the tools are different (no slate weapons, etc.). Hyrule Warriors is a great game and it's definitely worth a play. I'm typically the kind of person who follows "the bigger the better" when it comes to games, but the one bad thing I'll say about Hyrule Warriors is that it's the rare example of a game that is almost "too" big. There's just too much content, which you'll see once you complete the main story mode and dive into the Legends mode or whatever it's called. You'll need to drop hundreds of hours just to beat Legends mode, not 100% it, just complete it. I can't imagine how much time it takes to actually 100% Hyrule Warriors.

Such a meme answer. I have over 1,000 hours in Hyrule Warriors on Switch 1 and never had a problem with it. I didn't even know about it until read about it here on /v/. Unless you're leaving your console on for days at a time with the game running, you won't have a problem with it.

Dressing up fairies and a few new levels doesn't address the game's original problems alongside the excessive padding and repetitive missions.

HW is better as a celebration of the franchise with tons of fan service. As a musou it is better than AoC. It has a ton of content but it isn't very deep.
AoC has better characters (in terms of movesets), but the general gameplay is worse. It suffers from being focused entirely on the BotW setting. It's more repetitive and boring, but has less content bloat.
AoI will likely be identical to AoC.

The chip damage shit is a symptom of the gauge existing, they funnel you into a shitty reactive playstyle which is the complete antithesis of usual musou officer fights where you can freely interact with an enemy.

The break gauge being required for Manhandla and Gohma is tedious and at a higher level, you can actually do decent damage to King Dodongo without relying on it, until you realize each boss has that pushback mechanic that forces you to use the respective item to reveal it. Using items to reveal the break gauge to do damage when you're at a lower level is ideal, then when you get to a high enough level, you won't need it, but can still use the gauge to stun bosses, not as a requirement to beat them.

The item shop being added in the later editions is an unfathomable godsend.
You would have to unironically backtrack to find a square that gave like a raft, and often times even getting to that spot was a giant quest in of itself requiring several branch off points to find other items or avoiding hair pulling missions needed to pass through tiles.

Not happening anytime soon. The reason there wasnt a direct sequel was that there simly not enough new zelda content since the wii u to warrant it. The only new games since then, link between worlds, botw, totk, and eow. They used the first for dlc, and the next two they milked for all they're worth leaving only eow untapped. Maybe after the next 3d zelda game but still wouldnt be enough new content

Age of Calamity had more diverse character mechanics but it had like, no strategy elements at all, everything is just about going forward and smashing your face against bloated HP bars. At least in HWDE you sometimes need to pay attention to the map and the keeps and it kinda helps it's not literally just BotW content stretched extremely thin.

They have Zelda I, II, AlttP, LA, the Oracle games, MC, FS/A, PH and even stuff from the represented games that could still be used. That's bullshit on your end. There's plenty to use in terms of characters, enemies, mobs, bosses, commanders and so on. Never mind OC's like Lana, Wizzro and Volga.
