But it's the exact opposite though! Miyamoto got promoted to overseeing the theme parks, the overall brand, and the Mario-Zelda movie franchises which means he doesn't work on the games anymore. The people making the Mario games actually DO care about the continuity, which is why they brought back Pauline to begin with and tried to fit her into the overall continuity.
Okay, Mario fought DK in some kind of NYC like city, so how do we fit that into the Mario-verse? They created the Metro Kingdom (NY state) and New Donk City (NYC). that's in-keeping with Miyamoto's idea that DK 1981 took place in NYC. THen what about Pauline? She can't be a princess, so they make her the mayor.
This is also explaining where the hell the humans fit into the mario-verse, since you see Peach and Mario but no one else. Turns out there's entire human cities out there, we just didn't see them.
it's implied Mario is from new Donk City as well which explains his origins.
For Bananza, they're trying to connect Donkey Kong Country and Mario where previously they felt like separate univereses. We even see that K Rool has never been to a human city before, though he was aware of humans. DK and Kremlings were off fighting their little wars on their islands far from human civilization.
Hell, they even explain in Bananza that K. Rool and his Kremling krew got stuck trying to find the Banandium root so that's why thye missed out on 20 years of DK games.
