Most people were generally resistant to franchises doing the made up future setting anyways, and from what I've seen when COD does fake country, fake setting people didn't care for it all that much either. Especially when it was really easy to see the real life parallels

It takes effort and the idea of real world abstracts guarantees the following:
1. You have reference models already
2. You don't have to world build nearly as much
3. It lets you open wallets from nationalists, especially Americans
4. It opens you to funding from the government, which does this for recruitment

Personally I'd take the setting of Bellum Aria where the nations of the Halkarva Sea inlet are fighting a war of existence against the Almerian Federation and its South Ostian Treaty allies and broken arrow nukes are going off willy nilly while duo-turret tanks advance in armor columns under the support of MLRS artillery and stealth drones hunt Ostian scum in the mud trenches of during the Red Autumn Knife-fight.

Maybe throw in some geopolitics with how the Halkarva Sea is just a proxy war to test out equipment for the upcoming, Fifth World War.

But for now, we'll get America vs. Not-Russia.
