-7 separated leaders from Civilizations, you can now mix and match. It really robs the game of it's identity, and again showcases how out of touch Firaxis is with their playerbase. They really misread people liking the leaders as players preferring them over civilizations they represent.
-Balancing the game into unfunny extent where every game plays the same and map generation offers no surprises or interesting situations - though I think they have finally somewhat alleviated this recently.
-Severe lack of gameplay options and pretty bad map generation in general where the game generates really boring more or less square shaped continents.
-Really buggy and unfinished launch. Lack of basic QoL features. I think they just recently added elementary shit like auto-explore for scouts and ships.
-Era system now soft resets the game every era in name of balance and snowballing prevention, stemming from Firaxis trying to figure out a way to increase completion % of games since they thought people dropping campaigns when they know they have lost or when they have already won so much rest is going to be boring is a 4X design flaw they just had to address.
-Related to latter, a system where you have to grind leader customization by playing complete games to unlock
