Now that Civ VII flopped and does not seem to be salvageable, what will be next for the Civilization series?

-Disastrous copying of Humankind's civ swapping system where you change civilization you play as in each era. It was unpopular in Humankind and I got no idea what the fuck Firaxis was thinking in copying it.
-7 separated leaders from Civilizations, you can now mix and match. It really robs the game of it's identity, and again showcases how out of touch Firaxis is with their playerbase. They really misread people liking the leaders as players preferring them over civilizations they represent.
-Balancing the game into unfunny extent where every game plays the same and map generation offers no surprises or interesting situations - though I think they have finally somewhat alleviated this recently.
-Severe lack of gameplay options and pretty bad map generation in general where the game generates really boring more or less square shaped continents.
-Really buggy and unfinished launch. Lack of basic QoL features. I think they just recently added elementary shit like auto-explore for scouts and ships.
-Era system now soft resets the game every era in name of balance and snowballing prevention, stemming from Firaxis trying to figure out a way to increase completion % of games since they thought people dropping campaigns when they know they have lost or when they have already won so much rest is going to be boring is a 4X design flaw they just had to address.
-Related to latter, a system where you have to grind leader customization by playing complete games to unlock

Yeah, that too. 7 has by far the weakest art direction in the series. Plenty of people dislike the aesthetics of Civ 6, but at least it was a distinguished art direction.

The current year's audience would just whine about doomstacks despite them still being the best way to play single player Civ. Though Old World actually having good AI removes any excuses Firaxis has for their 1UPT AI still being so retarded.

Why not swap leaders instead of countries? If any aspect of the series was a weird sticking point it's the civs being ruled by some 2000 year old immortal god-king.
Start with a mythical ancient ruler and then switch to one of ~three possible subsequent rulers with different bonuses whenever the era changes, so you might want to switch to a famous historical general or politician or businessman depending on what your objectives are.

They were probably designing and developing this game when Humankind was still getting hype and good press. They were afraid that if they didn't compete, they'd get left behind. Because of how long it takes to make a game (although god knows why this is the case for Civ), devs are always 2-3 years behind the fans. If the fans wanted something 3 years ago, you give it to them now, at the point where they no longer want it.

That's why long dev cycles make no sense and why the industry needs to move back to smaller titles. Again, though, Civ should qualify as a small title, so it makes you wonder what they're doing in that office all day.

Civilization was never yearly though. The games always came out around 3-4 years apart.
For good reason, if they were yearly, people would have caught on very quickly that they are buying the exact same game every year, and Civilization normalfags are smarter than Madden players and would notice.

Civ games have been quite vastly different. 1>2 and 3>4 are the only ones I would call just a direct an improvement over previous one, and 3 does still have it's own dedicated fanbase too.
