Call me an idiot, I haven't played much, but are none of the tracks in this game conventional "go around the track for a lap" and the laps are all more distance markers?

Its the same as previous mario kart games with "ovals" 3 lap tracks in addition to the new A to B sections that connect tracks. If you join the /v/ lobby or any other lobby, press start and you can manually select to play the three lap version of any course rather than voting for the A to B connection tracks. If by oval you specifically mean Baby Park that is a literal oval, it isn't in this game.

The only courses that don't circle around are crown city, dk spaceport, and rainbow road

Discounting the intermissions and knockout, its just like 7 and 8. There's a handful of A to B races but most are normal 3 laps (with one 5 lap). Offhand there's 4 A to B (DK Spaceport, Crown City, Mario Circut and Rainbow Road).

The drivers don’t matter as much this game. Kart stats are more important and give more flexibility for your over all stats.
