>>716536586 (OP)The actual context of the quote is the guy is basically saying Sega shook off the doldrums of the HD era dark age that haunted(or outright killed) a lot of Japanese developers in the mid to late 00s throughout the 2010s. And going forward he doesn't want Sega to just not be the usual AAA publisher focusing on shitting out new entries in already successful franchises. To keep making interesting experiences that aren't just generically broad mass appeal stuff like open world Ubisoft-style stuff or over-the-shoulder sad dad adventure games.
It's basically a follow up to the interview where he said he wants Sega to be the rock music to Nintendo's pop and jazz.
Honestly the biggest black mark is the live service push but at least post-Hyenas they've mostly saved that for the Rovio acquisition which already has a lot of success with Angry Birds rather than "bro trust me this time we're gonna make the next COD"
Navigating the post-covid market/AI rush and possible/probable recession is going to be a Herculean task for anybody in charge of a company, especially a creative industry like video games. A lot of people were gambling on a lot of money entering the market come GTA6 and now that's been delayed to 2026. Right now the game is who is best positioned to tank the next few years and what their company's long-term behavior has been up to this point.
