I think it would have been cool if 7th Gen consoles kept memory card functionality just as a way to bring a save file over to a friends. The one thing I liked about memory cards was the ability to bring it a friends house in case they didn't have all characters unlocked in a game but I did or easily show them a cool part of a game to get them interested.

Unironically better than the system we have now.

You had 100% control of your save files. You can back them up however you want instead of being forced to pay for cloud storage (ironically Microsoft is the only one that offers it for free) or doing bulk backups of the entire system to one dedicated drive.

Didn't need to sign to your profile, install and download 90 gigs of a game to continue playing at a friend's house. Put in disc. Put in card.

Because you had multiple cards.

It was fine for the era but now when several magnitudes larger is itself considered painfully outdated you can store every single save on a single device.

Hence why these things have supplanted memory cards. Even a by-today's-standards "dinky" 16GB will absolutely annihilate the storage of even a Memory Card 1019.

No.

It is a fact that PS2 were constructed like shit and kept dying. That's why there was a class action lawsuit. The xbox was notoriously solid as a rock. The capacitor issue is massively overblown. First, it was not specifically an xbox issue. It was a universal issue that plagued the entire electronics industry. Second, the result of this capacitor failure was not the destruction of the console. The capacitor that would fail was used as battery backup. All that happened was if you unplugged your console from the wall it would forget the date and time.

You had to manually tune analog TVs back in the day of the NES. The channels were just swapping between your manually set tunings. So what it actually was was pick a channel you weren't already using, turn on the NES, and then start turning the tuning knob until you got picture and sound.

No, only the first rendition of the original Xbox had the capacitor issues, and you can fix it super easy so it doesn't fail.
You just look up what capacitor it is, open up the box, rip the capacitor out and your good.
The capacitor is just to keep the internal clock on while the Xbox is off, so it doesn't hurt anything to rip it out, it just won't keep time anymore.
And if it has failed, there is a decent chance that you can just clean the board of the acid and it will work again. I've saved a few "broken" Xboxes that I bought for cheep this way.

I have zero nostalgia for old devices. I play a lot of old games, though, but all on a relatively modern PC with a good processor and an RTX3090. The input lag problem has been more or less solved with current solutions, and the only thing I really regret is that there isn't a display technology that's really good for video games (including OLED).
The other day I was watching a video on YouTube and the collector was commenting on how the maintenance process becomes increasingly common for those who have several old consoles, and he simply decided to get rid of 75% of all his consoles, otherwise he will start a cycle where he will just try to keep them working, with no time for anything else but maintenance.

the data on a CD is not stored on the surface, it's burned into a membrane in between the surface layer and the back of the CD. Scratching the surface will not effect the data on the disc, however it might cause the data to become unreadable by obstructing the view of the laser which has to read the data through the transparent outer layer on the disc. Theoretically, sanding the disc down or grinding it could enhance readability, but it could also likewise introduce new scratches and grooves, making the disc harder to read. There was truth behind the toothpaste meme.

No wonder the PS2 sold loads; one glance in any catalogue and the PS2 section was games games games games games and more games, AND a DVD player.
Any other section in these catalogues looked as pitiable as this one. I mean look at that Xbox selection-- just terrible at a glance.
But I had a PS2 and a GameCube and I preferred the GameCube because it had really fucking good first-party titles at the time, at least imo. And it just felt like games for gamers. And I paid Β£60 for one brand new in like 2004 from Toys R Us and it came with like 8 games bundled with it...
PS2 was the pizza and BlockBuster on a Friday night machine while your friend sleeps over and you stay up to watch fake tits at 11pm on EuroTrash via the CRT TV you snuck into your room.

i recall reading a scientific article on disc rot and the study showed that rot had more to do with the initial disc manufacturing process than to do with overall age.

small manufacturing imperfections such as oxygen bubbles, gases, and dust particulates being trapped under the label during pressing in most if not all cases will produce rot. however this is something you might only find in the poorest manufacturing conditions.

what this means is disc rot is actually an overstated conspiracy. while it's guaranteed every disc will eventually decompose, the "when" for that is not as close as one would have you believe. not every disc that is old is going to succumb to inevitable rot just because it's old.

Sure, it's how you store your discs that is going to contribute to how fast the rot kicks in, and while I take care of my discs, there isn't any guarantee that some freak accident won't occur one day and renders those discs dead.

Correct, it revived the N64's Goldeneye era - with both games, when they were hot every single weekend was centered around all the neighborhood kids all going to one house to play 4 player deathmatches until late into the night. No other console I've owned led to that kind of mass community building where it was understood that every weekend, this is what everyone gets together to do.

I have a friend of mine that had a 3rd party PS2 memory card where you had to use the disc that came with the memory card to access the save data on it and to use the memory card you had to put the disc in first and then you had to eject the disc and put in the game disc you want to play.

Definitely was a pain in the ass to use, and if you lose/break the disc, the memory card becomes useless. Only positive side with the memory card was when using the disc to use it, you can compress save file sizes down to smaller sizes which was cool for it's time.

Discs were the worst type of storage media and I'm glad they had a relatively short reign as the dominate product. Cartridges of all types have always been more reliable in the long term compared to discs. I used to buy used games all the time, and I can remember if being a 50/50 shot that anything I bought on disc was gonna suddenly not work at some point in the game. At least on 360 you could install the full game to the drive so that it would run fine if you could at least boot. I had to do that with Fable 2 and GTA5. Also saying this makes me realize GTA5 was a 360 era game. Holy hell.

This shit worked wonders. You could use any smooth toothpaste too, but you'd need significantly more elbow grease. This and a rag would buff out most any scratches. Only way I was able to finish Kingdom Hearts after my siblings scraped it to hell.

evil selfish fatherless bastard piece of shit tries to provoke negative reactions for attention just to practice his ability to feign innocence and play the act of the little confused ignorant christian good boy part because there's never been a father figure in his life to beat the fucking shit out of him and insult him to teach him not to act or pretend like a little bitch and to mature an actual, real personality who can posses the ability to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

that's why he grew up to be a crackhead.

05-10 was still good but definitely in a silver/bronze age sense. The 10s were...thank God for handhelds, I guess.

I like some aspects of the 20s more than the 10s. I like some recent horror games more and there's been some very good indies. AAA is in absolute fucking freefall though, not that it already wasn't since the 10s.

>Kingdom Hearts 2 finally arrives in the mail
>refuses to save on my 32 GB third-party memory card
>had to scour pawnships until I find an official 8 GB memory card
In all fairness, the third-party card would corrupt a few older saves. I transferred my treasured ones (FFX, Ratchet & Clank) onto the brand-name one for safekeeping.

I haven't bought a physical disc in a decade. Everything is cartdridge/SD or installed directly to a drive for me and I prefer it that way. Much easier to dump stuff and copy. I hated having no other option but discs back then.

its the same in most industries, the start of a new industry is when people are the most enthusiastic and trying new things. After a while a few companies dominant and basically all innovation from then on ends up in the hands of the few of those handful of "survivor" companies.

It’s like ford vs Ferrari. Muscle cars go wheeee then the oil crisis hits. Now ford sells trucks and Ferrari costs 3 million. But they raced? For what? Now it’s all Japanese imports.

Ninty vs Sega. Turned into software devs. Now dominated by MS. Want NV GPU? Sell me your soul. Want affordable GPU? Wait till you die. MS stock goes up 200x.

You could barely see the colors on the original GBA for how dark that screen was, the SP's clickier buttons were better and the clamshell design made it even more portable, and fuck you if you actually miss replacing AA batteries all the time.

And I could play my SP at night when I was supposed to be asleep, like every kid wanted to. I will say this much about the colors though - the screen did pale in comparison to the Micro. Fuck almost everything about its form function and lack of OG Game Boy support but that screen was fucking incredible for the hardware.
