They showed they are capable of very good writing and stories in judgment series, 0 and 7, what happened here? Series should be planned ahead. Finishing one, waiting and eventually starting the next is a bad approach. It really shows in their writing that show they approach the chapters. They could set it in any of the past decades, except the 90's b/c Japan has some really weird social lore about the 'lost 90's' which is why Kiryu went to jail during those years. Pretty much any time before that would work without any form of reboot.

I think they're just going to keep pushing the international man / james bond flavor they've been going off of since Y6. The series can't keep doing the local stuff, or rather, the writers don't want to do it anymore. I'm not sure what they do with Ichiban. They should sweep up the entire Ichiban x Kiryu saga in Y9 and then just get all new, younger characters. Or, give Kiryu the immortal tea and phase out Ichiban entirely so we get a whole new decade of Kiryu Kazama.

I think the blame is likely on Yokoyama entirely. I don't buy the idea that Nagoshi was doing all the real work, but I would bet he was the one reigning in Yokoyama's spaghet. Just look at what he did with no oversight. It's not like he can't write good stories, but he crammed way too much stuff into Y8 and it became an incoherent mess. At the end of the game, the only stakes or interest were for Kiryu. Ichiban goes back to being a level 1 idiot while Kiryu gets all of the character development. Should have never gotten rid of Kiryu in the first place or Ichiban's games should have been all side story/Gaidens instead of mainline titles. Or, if they really wanted to retire Kiryu, they'd need to get a legitimate replacement. I think they failed at implementing party fights to the brawler system and then swapped it over to turn based until they could. It's obvious they're working on it with Gaiden and Pirates showing they can do it now. Although Gaiden was much better than Pirates, which felt more like a musou.

Making iw with flanderizichiban and kiryu was a mistake, esp with this bad pacing. Some companions join last minute. What an idiotic choice for a party rpg. The two hawaii characters might be the worst rpg companions of all time.

Technically, the games are bad. I like them and played everything except ishin, but they are bad on a technical level. There's basically no difficulty whatsoever, as you can carry 50000 healing items. Even legend was relatively straight forward in lad. The last dungeon does pigeonhole the party a bit, but is straight forward, too. Haven't tried big swell, yet. It's worse than tfmt. Is the sujimon dlc worth it? The way I see it, it's 10 bucks for majima as unequipable sujimon. Doesn't seem worth the time and money.
