What's with the sudden backlash against HD2D games? It's a cool and visually interesting way to stylize a game, but somehow a lot of people became mindbroken over it.
>>717036618 (OP) I always thought it looked bad. I'm being honest not just trying to shit post. I am simply not fond of all the unity effects they use.

Too many effects and bloom to hide the fact it is lacking in animation quality
>>717036618 (OP) It's largely associated with titles that start as Nintendo exclusives, so shitposting is in full force against them, despite being multiplats.

>>717036618 (OP) I've been shitting on it since day 1 because it looks awful. And they try to hide the fact that it looks awful but coating it in several layers of post processing filters and over-use of lighting effects.
>>717036618 (OP) Even though they are all marketed as "HD2D" they don't even look visually similar. Some of them have way more bloom than others. Some of them go through a lot to make the environments look like pixels and others are just flat out sprite characters in a generic 3D world. When people just lump them all together as "HD2D looks good" or "HD2D looks bad" it shows me that they have no ability to actually interpret aesthetics to begin with and simply follow the marketing.

>>717036618 (OP) >sudden We have hated Octoshart from the first second
>>717037075 Yeah, it's like they're trying to bury stiff animations under a mountain of lens flare and fog effects. Every cutscene looks like a J.J. Abrams fever dream. Back in the day, good spritework animated well didn’t need all this fake cinematic dressing. Now it's just sparkle vomit to distract from barebones movement and lifeless expressions.
I think that some HD@D games look pretty good, it's just the Octopath devs' games that I think look atrocious. I gave it a pass for their first few games since they pioneered the style, but there's no reason their games should still look the same after the Dragon Quest 3 and Star Ocean 2 remakes. It doesn't even make sense from a nostalgic point of view in the case of Elliot. Classic ARPGs didn't look like Final Fantasy IV. They looked like Secret of Mana and Terranigma. Ellliot's art style is objectively worse than the 30-year-old games it's emulating.
>>717036618 (OP) >HD2D "improves" pixel art in the laziest way possible >most of the gameplay is a lazy rehash of old genres It's a perfect warning sign of overproduced but undercooked slop.

>>717036618 (OP) There's no issue with the general idea of sprites in a 3D environment, lots of early 3D games did this and it's a classic artstyle. There was a lot of novelty around Octopath 1 when it was first revealed because the style had gone out of favor for a long time, and now that we've had a lot of games in this style people are noticing some of the flaws in the way these games use the style.

No I don't want Tactics Ogre or FFT in this style, no it wouldn't look better. Want to make a new IP in this style, yeah sure go for it I'm not interested though.

>>717041754 You are being too reductive, the HD2D style is also functional since the games are true 3D, it adds ways you can interact or move thru the environments that wouldn't be possible in true 2D. You can see this in Elliot where your altitude is very important because of the fairy warp mechanic.

/v/ isn't people, this is a board filled with retards that praise shitty china gacha trash. Go look at actually normalfag places if you want a real consensus.
I'm just tired of uninspired bland JRPGs Octopath had such a promising premise and then under delivered. Triangle Strategy was unbearably dull from the beginning. Now we get their mediocre take on a Zelda style action RPG featuring the same mind numbingly boring art direction from all of their other games.
