Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water

Combat mechanics are the best the series has ever seen but the second half of the story is universally scorned by the fans. I don't think someone who hates Fatal Frame as a series could do this much damage if they tried.

Legends Arceus.

Honestly was a pretty fun spin-off. But the cutscenes take FOREVER and are so braindead and unskippable. Tons of shitty clan disputes that I could not care for.

Like in the beginning they were literally "you go help capture pokemon or we will kill you." Also you have been isekai'd and it's never explained why. I guess because of the spatial distortions (which aren't explained either) but you are specifically given an Arceus phone, meaning that Arceus brought you here. Everyone in the village is freaking out over some spooky clouds in the mountain and are blaming you for it. Also they keep pressing you on how important capturing and studying pokemon is but when you 100% the pokedex they don't give a SHIT. Male Cynthia summons Giratina and that was the only cool part of the game, plot-wise.

I want to say that the golden standard for a videogame story is DMC3. Characters have arcs, goals they achieve, there's a couple of twists, it's thoroughly decent and doesn't get in the way with exposition dumps or eternal drama awards baiting or whatever.

I'm inclined to agree desu. I remember being disappointed DMC3 would be a prequel prior to buying it. Little did I know it would be fucking awesome. It doesn't stick around too long, and it's the last time DMC 'felt' like DMC in my opinion. Not to say I hated the gameplay of 4 or 5, but 3 really feels like DMC coming into the identity it was meant to have.

DD's story is fine, at least the overall story even if 80% of the ingame main quest line is just "do random shit to meet the duke", if anything it's the gameplay that takes more hits with stuff like the flat defense calcs requiring periapts to not be painful, that 90% of the bosses were nuked in Dark Arisen, so on.
