The game has a very dark story which is then undermined by the game's mechanics. For example, Isaac can make a deal with the Devil or God, but the decision loses its moral dimension and becomes a simple question of what's more beneficial for the run, which is only reinforced the longer you play the game. Isaac's soul is treated as a commodity.
And the DLC make it worse because we can see how the game markets itself. It promises new items, bosses, levels and so on. It promises "fun"
which is built on top of childhood trauma.
