It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way.

Suppose two men at cards with nothing to wager save their lives. Who has not heard such a tale? A turn of the card. The whole universe for such a player has labored clanking to this moment which will tell if he is to die at that manโ€™s hand or that man at his. What more certain validation of a manโ€™s worth could there be? This enhancement of the game to its ultimate state admits no argument concerning the notion of fate. The selection of one man over another is a preference absolute and irrevocable and it is a dull man indeed who could reckon so profound a decision without agency or significance either one. In such games as have for their stake the annihilation of the defeated the decisions are quite clear. This man holding this particular arrangement of cards in his hand is thereby removed from existence. This is the nature of war, whose stake is at once the game and the authority and the justification. Seen so, war is the truest form of divination. It is the testing of oneโ€™s will and the will of another within that larger will which because it binds them is therefore forced to select. War is the ultimate game because war is at last a forcing of the unity of existence. War is god.

Maybe the "War is beautiful and glorious and poetic" idea had merit back in the old days of arrows and spears and sword and board
When it's nonstop artillery strikes and shrapnel and deafening explosions where you can barely tell what the fuck is happening before life stops because of a tiny object moving faster than sound hitting your heart, then fuck no war isn't desirable anymore it's too fucking terrifying

That is exactly why it is so beautiful, that is what we were born for, to advance war. War is the Alpha and the Omega. We are merely vessels to carry out war, and continue war, and perfect war. War is one. War is all.
From the first breath of the cosmos, to its final twilight. Since single cell organisms, to hyper intricate beings beyond our comprehension. Life has always been about competition. It is the... meaning of life.

I tell you this. As war becomes dishonored and its nobility called into question those honorable men who recognize the sanctity of blood will become excluded from the dance, which is the warrior's right, and thereby will the dance become a false dance and the dancers false dancers. And yet there will be one there always who is a true dancer and can you guess who that might be?

You aint nothin.

You speak truer than you know. But I will tell you. Only that man who has offered himself up entire to the blood of war, who has been to the floor of the pit and seen horror in the round and learned at last that it speaks to his innermost heart, only that man can dance.

Even a dumb animal can dance.

The judge set the bottle on the bar. Hear me, man, he said. There is room on the stage for one beast and one alone. All others are destined for a night that is eternal and without name. One by one they will step down into the darkness before the floodlamps. Bears that dance, bears that dont.

"War" is just a shorter way of saying "propelling 2,000 pounds of high-explosives, computers and aluminum at 7 times the speed of sound to strike a target the size of your grandmother's TV on the other side of the planet." And that is very cool, not the poetry night stuff about great generals or god. Fighter jets are cool, battleships are cool, tanks are cool, even/especially if they're shooting wrecked hulks of steel in the middle of the desert of the ocean.

>Exactly, same with the miracle of childbirth, or holding your mothers hand while she passes.
The point I was trying to make is that just being "universal" isn't enough for us to consider a thing beautiful. We might take this cosmic approach and talk about endless cycles and how valuable shit and rot are, but we generally don't. And when someone does, you'll see that basically everything in life stands on equal footing as part of this cycle.
Your examples are valuable not just because they're universal (and holding your dying mom's hand is not universal btw) but because we feel (mostly intuitivly) that there's some greater value to these moments. Considering that (you) gave the whole cycle of life in these two examples, I think it's fair to assume that (you) value life itself, but war is the direct opposite of it.

Valuing life means getting along with death. You can't sit there afraid and hating it, it's all part of the same cycle. Death is the most meaningful thing to happen to most people, I think. You haven't seen someone waxing philosophical while butchering an animal? Half the cultures in the world still thank the animal for dying and providing food for them.

I think that we shouldn't legitimize war as "getting along with death," simple as.
I don't have a problem with killing animals for food and the kind of tradition you describe actually shows to me the recognition of the tragedy of needing to kill in order to survive. It's not that we cannot find beaty in war or whatever, but I think that the tragedy behind it should be recognised. Even in cases when war is defensive and is necessary to protect your family, liberty and so on, we cannot hide the fact that it's synonyms with undeserved and avoidable death both among the military and civilians.

Ritualized combat for the sake of mastery of one's skill is way cooler than war ngl.
War is where poor sod get drafted or press ganged into dying for a cause that might be tangentially related to theirs and hoping that they are not part of the large statistic that ends up being maimed by whatever new technology is popping off at the time.
When you choose to become a fighter instead is to perfect your body and prove you're better than other people who are also people striving for the path of mastery.
The very act of engaging in this is sacred and divine

>People who never fought in one romanticized it.
That's not necessarily true. Look at the Teutonic Knights, for example. People back then thought of war differently primarily because of the natural brutality of life even outside of war, but also because war itself was different. WW1 was such a turning point because of that. Read any books from around that era, there was droves of people signing up to fight when the war first began because war was seen as a way for boys to become men, a way to secure higher social status, etc etc. It wasn't seen as a meatgrinder yet despite horrific shit like Napoleon's failed Russian campaign being in the close past and a widely known failure. Even with that said, there's accounts of even WW1 vets that overtly disagree with the idea there's a lack of merit in warfare.
War and the public view of it is as awful as it is for multiple reasons, but it can pretty much all be traced back to the overwhelming advancement of technology and the death of patriotism. It's very telling that nowadays a regular individual can sniff out how awful war is with little to no exposure. We aren't having viewing parties for battles anymore for a reason.

You are not removed from existence after taking a shit. He's completely correct, all in this existence is in a perpetual state of war. From the smallest bacteria on or inside your body to the largest heavenly bodies consuming one another via gravity or dissipation by celestial winds. Before we did not exist, these things could not be named, but now that we are here to observe and practice them, they are. You opining on this matter is as relevant as a stone rolling down a mountain after being kicked. Cause and effect, caused by nothing of import, going nowhere in particular. Only war endures.

True, jets without artillery could exist if its for logistic purposes of getting from difficult place to get to type of thing. Most logistics things could also exist like trains and ships. Nothing of value is lost if war doesn't exist in a world and only focuses on civilization building and solves its violence issues through duels. That would be fucking kino.

I agree war is part of civilization existence but this is all to say that while I agree that airplanes get faster development because of war, there's still a need for them outside of war. They were co-opted by war but they don't need war to justify it's existence
Unlike say tanks who are weapons and only that

Sure but my argument really is that war doesn't really get to have the credit for jets being a thing.
Jets exist because people have out of the own volition have decided that flying is cool. Like actually cool.

War can take the credit for tanks and guns tho

I've seen one of these pictures here before,

Anyway, if you like playing video games because they are fun, you put your production buildings in the center, and you fill literally everything with roads haha

I see more and more people playing video games like they all are truck simulator or you name it (I don't play those), so yeah, who knows.

Definitely interesting. You do you! I still have to think this is "wrong" though... like a missed oportunity, like playing with the gift wrapping

Yeah agreed. Seeing someone push themselves to the brink of strength and competing with others who pushed themselves is amazing. You knowingly accept the risks involved but you aren't aiming to literally end a life.
Then in war some poor sap who could have lived a fulfilling life gets shredded to mincemeat because a fuckhead needs more money.
