I'm not sure why japanese women are more prevalent in gaming than in the west. There's a lot more notable ones in terms of artists and musicians and they can hard sell a game with their design and music.

in America, i suspect composers were mainly recruited from Hollywood or the dev team, which was male-dominated
i guess when a few women become prolific early on, it makes it much easier for other women to follow suite (IIRC, shimomura was initially discouraged by her family from joining the game industry)
kind of like how literature used to be dominated by men, but since the past decade or two or so, most trending authors these days are women
