you get uh vac barriers for your freezers for a super autodoor that perfectly seals in the cold and never impedes movement because it doesn't open or close
getting quest rumors after interacting with traders or helping beggars is neat I suppose but that's not worth a price tag for any amount
the shuttles are nice for basic questing and trading with bases but there was a mod that let you build the shuttles the game already had for years or just use stuff like srts everyone was already using, in the classic tynan move the carry capacity for the shuttle is atrocious considering that you need to buy an engine from a trader for each one even if its not exactly expensive or rare
the biomes and weather changes are neat but not worth money even before you compare them to the dozens of biome mods out there
landmarks are cool I guess but its something that should have been in the game already for years and still not worth bothering with if you're going to have a permanent base unless you choose to start on a specific terrain formation
making a small/medium sized gravship for doing caravan stuff so you have a pre built shelter and field hospital is kind of nice but once again not really anything to phone home about
the unique weapons are trash because the system is just a lazy rehash of persona weapon traits but only for a specific selection of ranged weapons and at least with persona weapons if the traits were mediocre or bad it was still a fucking monosword/plasmasword/zeushammer which could be worth grabbing not a fucking greatbow you go questing for that shoots slightly faster
maybe if it was an actual fucking system for modding weapons yourself instead of rolling randomly it would be worth mentioning
even playing it for free I feel gypped

The new spaceship dlc is just an official cheat mod that makes the game so much easier. It adds nothing new to the gameplay except you can now build a giant transport pot and live inside it Instead of having a permanent base on land. The only real application is that when Randy decides to give you the middle finger by throwing you 3 raids and a solar flare in succession and you don't want to deal with it, you can now just click a button and fly to another tile on the planet and have a map reset.

Besides the ship the DLC adds a bunch of biome and animals for immersion, but none of them are game changing. You're still doing the same thing as before.
In terms of weaponry the DLC only adds 2 new laser beam handgun which deals fire damage. They're not that great because they have shorter range and dps then charged rifle, and they do 0 damage against mechs because ... fire damage don't work on mechs. So even with Odyssey installed the end game is still going to be charge rifle + marine armor for everyone.

there just isn't an easy to find in between for getting raped or trivializing the game
once you get to the point where you have a decently sized border wall the difficulty of most threats enters freefall even if you don't make a killbox
if you go out of your way to not make a border wall of some sort raid scaling will just throw 50 niggers at you that will simply win numerically because deaths and injuries are no consequence to raiders whose only objective is to cause damage to the player

No. It adds a lot of other stuff beside the ship that is worth _having_, but the majority of these are things that also exist as free mods (fishing, diverse map gen, heavy bridges, new animals, biomes, landmarks, player shuttles, bunkers that utilize Z-levels, etc.). The same was true for Biotech (plenty of mods for mechanoids, offspring, alien races, toxic mechanics, etc.). For both Odyssey and Biotech, I think the expansion does it better than all their equivalent mods combined, and certainly it's consistent with Rimworld's balance philosophy, but if for example these were mods you wouldn't have bothered using in the first place, why care for the expac at all? And if some are to your interest but you think you're fine with the discount mod version of the mechanics, why not just use the mod? Only pay for a DLC if it's something you're certain you want.

Killbox are very efficient but not the only way of defending your base. It all comes back to how combat in vanilla is very weak and RNG dependent. No one will blame you for getting a combat mod that makes armor less garbage like Vanilla Combat Reloaded or just going full Combat Extended and mowing down tribals by the hundreds with guns.

most of the reason killboxes are so powerful besides giving you a cover advantage and mitigating the raider's body spam advantage is that it simply buys you time to respond
a lot of problems with how the game handles threats and raids would be fixed if you could get some manner of delayed warning instead of niggers just being dropped on your map when the size of the map becomes more of an issue with every update demanding more map space for something or other
human raiders should have objectives besides a general "do damage to the player's wealth score" and make demands that you can either fork over or know that you need to guard a specific store room or person they're after
the game could give you a general direction the raiders are going to enter the map from and some short timer before they actually show up, enough to put on armor and maybe reinstall prebuilt turrets or traps but not enough to build more than a paltry bunker
surprise type raids should still be surprises but you're telling me 100 impids are marching over to my base and nobody could notice them before they get on the map square you can walk the full length of several times in one day

Vanilla? It is, all you need is to have everyone use long-ranged weapons (doesn't even need to be charged weapons or autos, semi-auto rifles with good damage and long range works). Get them all to pop drugs on combat (especially moving/manipulation up drugs), use Ideology to have Shooting Specialists to buff everyone else, then you just deathball and shoot from distance, and kite. If your pawns are faster than theirs, you can easily relocate when they get into their range, fire a round or three, relocate, fire a round or three, repeat until enemy dead. Works on mechanoids as well.

Unless what you want is honourable combat in which your guys sit there and just shoot as enemies approach. Well, then you better expect losses then.

There should be a big passive cooler that can push temperatures down to refrigeration level but not freeze on its own so lower tech colonies have less shitty food preservation options and the refrigeration mechanic has an actual application at some stage of the game. The second you get powered coolers you make a freezer because why would you ever set it higher than freeze for your food storage. Might as well not have the refrigerated temperature range in the game as it is now.

More siege raids.
Raiders show up, start building their own fortification, therefore denying the player that part of the map. The player is incentivised to go out and crush them before they do that.
Raiders also more often are able to construct long range weapons.
Raiders making such a camp also accumulate over time, calling in MORE raiders if you just live them to stand there.
Raiders also use weapons like setting fire to forests, dumping toxic waste, killing animals, mining ore to steal, and basically looting the map in ways that make the player come out meet them before they are done ruining his area.
When friendly/neutrals pass through the map during a siege, and they get attacked by raiders, this hurts their opinion of the player faction, further punishing a passive player.

Private property - Rimworld is a very collectivist game, despite having ideologions, greedy pawns, etc. Should be able to dedicate a bedroom, dining room, rec room, to ONE colonist. Other colonists shouldn't use his table. He should be mad if his art piece is moved. This should be implemented in ideologions, pawn traits, etc.
Guilds/Worker Unions - If your colony gets 3 people with very high mining skill, they form a Miner's Union, and demand a room to meet with other miners, and some miner themed decorations or w/e, and elect a leader who may make some apparel demands. Make something like this for every skill. These should be analogous to ideoligion temples, but simpler and smaller scale, just to add more variables for the player to juggle and more things to do damage control around, instead of having a perfectly optimal base. And if a union like that is disbanded, because the clever player decided to dismiss a pawn to break it, the remaining members get sad to punish such tactics.
Sail ships - should be trivial to add now that we have the gravships. Same superstructure idea, but more low tech themed, and restricted to water. World generation and settlement placement would need to change to make it practically useful and fun.

The best one I made was a multi year colony, I just wanted to collect all genes, so eventually I made a tough nimble brawler with pretty much every bionic, all skill downsides except melee, all defensive upsides, all melee upsides, calm and all healing boons, he also had pretty much all archite genes, which allowed for a nuclear stomache so he would not eat the colony clean.
With melee specialist + go juice, he could probably solo half a raid.
Felt cheesy towards the end, but it was a nice multi year project that took forever since gene extraction is an absolute pain.
