Yeah lmao it’s from Gen 8 - they basically fused the wrong fossil parts together after a bad night of snorting Dynamax dust. It looks like someone slapped a fish tail on a broken heat lamp and expected kids to be hyped. Peak Game Freak insanity.

It's a fossil pokenon that was brought back incorrectly so it's a fusion of 2 seperate parts and not the whole.
All the Gen 8 fossil pokemon are abominations like this because of that region's inept ability to bring them back.

in all fairness gen 9 kind of proved that smogon's vision for the game is increasingly incompatible with how game freak want the game to be
gen 9 introduced no less than two dozen face smashers who will all decimate an entire team in singles if they do not have two incredibly reliable hard counters at any one time that are both available and healthy

It's kind of like Mega Evolution. Here's a fun one

>Mega Tyranitar
>Ultra Sun: Due to the colossal power poured into it, this Pokémon's back split right open. Its destructive instincts are the only thing keeping it moving.
>Ultra Moon: The effects of Mega Evolution make it more ferocious than ever. It's unclear whether it can even hear its Trainer's orders.

Mega Evolving Tyranitar rips open its back. It's in constant screaming pain that it can only cope with by being so angry that it's too focused on tearing shit apart to understand the horror that's happening to it. And like half of Mega Evolutions are like this. Everyone treats Mega Evolution like some power of friendship power up when in reality it's a horrific mutation forced on living creatures via an alien mineral.

Mega Garchomp
Sun: Excess energy melted its arms and wings, transforming them into giant scythes.
Moon: Its vaunted wings become scythes, sending it mad with rage. It swings its scythes wildly and slices the ground to pieces.
Ultra Sun: Its arms and wings melted into something like scythes. Mad with rage, it rampages on and on.
Ultra Moon: Its disposition is more vicious than before its Mega Evolution. Garchomp carves its opponents up with the scythes on both arms.

What the fuck? Its arms melted?

Gen 5 sort of does.

In Gen 5 Team Plasma begins very public protests, arguing that capturing Pokemon to force them into battle was an abusive practice that needs to stop. These protests were led by N and his retainer Ghetsis. And maybe there was an argument to be had there, some NPCs at least question the morality of the current system of battling. But where N genuinely believes what he's saying, Ghetsis does not. He's a grifter that was using the protests to convince everyone to disarm, so he can keep his Pokemon and install himself as King of New York. And after his grift is exposed, everyone just drops it. After all, Pokemon WANT to battle. It's how they show trust in their trainers...I guess.

Also in Sun Moon when everyone calls out Lusamine for using her children as playthings and experimenting on Pokemon. And she tells you that she doesn't want to see you wagging your finger at her when you have hundreds of Pokemon trapped in the PC Boxes until you can find a use for them.

A series like Pokémon can't really address these sort of issues because at the end of the day it's not going to change. So what if you're weaponizing living creatures? Are you NOT going to catch em all and be the best like no one ever was? So any ethical dilemma like everything involving Mewtwo is immediately dropped

Not only do they let them live, the Pokedex descriptions go out of their way to make it clear that their lives fucking suck dick.

One of them can run on land but can't swim, but can only breathe underwater. Another is perpetually too cold because its own body generates freezing temperatures that it can't handle.

The ethical implications of the "cockfighting" are addressed a few times over the series, primarily in Legends Arceus and Black/White. The answer is consistently "The Pokemon like to fight as it helps them grow, and Pokemon choose to stay in their balls when you catch them, they're not forced" meaning there aren't really any ethical implications.

The ethical implications of the fossils aren't addressed because their concept is meant to be silly and reference the historical inaccuracy of palaeontology. The joke is that their lives suck. It's not meant to be taken seriously.

Usually when discussing bans, the question on the table is can a player reasonably play around this thing. In the case of trapping abilities, the reason why it gets banned is because you cannot play around it. If Mega Gengar, or Dugtrio, or Wobbufett are placed on the field, you just die. At best you attempt a switch move but come on, you know for a fact they're going first. And it's not like a crit where if happens sometimes if you're un/lucky, you're fucked the moment they touch the board. So you have 2 options
1. Every single team needs to be loaded with either flying types, ghost types, or switch moves to avoid being vaporized by trap pokemon
2. Just ban the trap pokemon

>but dont just patch out crits or rng damage variance on their website, the things actually keeping “competitive” pokemon down
Crits and RNG are actively helpful otherwise Pokemon would heavily favour a stall playstyle in almost all situations. They're very purposefully there for exactly that reason in both casual and official and fan competitive formats.

The issue we run into is that there are instances where Pokemon dislike fighting or dislike their trainers. Ghetsis's Hydreigon fucking HATES him. But it's still mandated to fight on his behalf. Lusamine acknowledged that keeping Pokemon trapped in the PC is canon. So it's entirely possible for a pokemon to dislike fighting and yet be forced to fight

now the battle is both people clicking moves that do nothing for like 100 turns because you can't switch

Its almost a guarenteed 1 for 1 at worst and can easily 6-0 if you catch your opponent off guard.

If Lusamine knew how that shit actually worked she'd have known the fucking HUSBAND THAT SHE WENT CRAZY OVER LOSING was literally living on an island with all the Pokemon from your boxes. Her negative interpretation of the PC boxes isn't necessarily an accurate description of what it is.

Generally "clicking giant damage move" is banworthy for the same reason why shadow tag/arena trap are. They invalidate your most important tool in the game, switching.
It warps the metagame into getting the threat in and clicking your move. Which is interesting, but it is also overcentralizing, because if Mr. Fish is legal, you can't play any strategy except "get Mr. Fish in safely and click Fishous Rend".

These things break the fantasy pokemon originally created. Seeing this things next to something like rhydon or tyranitar is just as jarring as seeing SpongeBob next to them
