rdr characters are all larger than life. the tonal shift to rdr2 where everyone is more grounded is weird and frankly boring. i don't care about like 70 percent of the gang because they are just bland.

Real life Southerners are even trashier than that. Trashy ass backwards culture. But it's the most genuine American culture, better than the faux royalty and ethnic conclaves of the North. I'm not even American, but I love American history.

RDR1 is further in the timeline. You're dealing mostly with the stragglers that managed to escape death in RDR2. They're going insane due to being closer to societal irrelevance.

GTA was always a zany over-the-top comedy, and RDR1 followed suit. RDR2, on the other hand, followed TLOU (and perhaps LA Noire, to be more charitable) by trying to be grounded

Rdr2 Javier was an entirely different character from rdr1. Wokestar ditched the accent and made him this noble wise man which made no fucking sense. But of course, you can't have a minority character have any sort of negative traits, even if that character is in a gang of murderous criminals. So fucking stupid.

LA Noire’s narrative is strong for about 90% of its run, but then things fall apart thanks to the pacing issues in the Arson Desk.
Anonymous No.717095984 [Report]
>>717086062 (OP)
yes but that's because the tone is totally different. the overarching narrative is "deep and somber and super serious" but the rest of the game was a fucking south park episode in terms of its absurdity. walking talking stereotype caricatures and mustache twirling villains abound, though the stranger missions were a bit more nuanced, which served to make the overall experience more interesting and memorable.

I do find it weird how RDR2 is unusually grounded and tactful for a R* game.

Every R* before it is usually filled with goofy moments and also crass South Park-esque comedy. Even the more serious Rockstar games like GTA IV and RDR1 followed this pattern. RDR2 seems more like LA Noire in the sense that it plays itself totally straight all the time and focuses on the drama. I wonder where this tonal shift came from?

Anonymous No.717096449 [Report] >>717096937
I wonder if they tried to tone the gang down to make it feel like you "fit in" more with the trash fuckos. It would make sense with Arthur coming to the general, obvious cutscene conclusions of
>Dutch, a dumbfuck retard who leads... other scumbag dumb fucks...
>maybe...we bad... and should be killed off...

They probably wanted to make the gang members sympathetic to play up the tragedy angle yeah. GTA IV and RDR1 were lauded for their tragic stories, so they probably wanted to make sure they made another tragedy. It’d be hard to feel bad about the gang’s downfall if they were all irredeemable. Better to have them be anti-heroes and criminals with some semblance of honour to make them more admirable. Micah is probably the most realistic depiction of an outlaw from that period, and he’s depicted as a “love to hate” villain.

I think it’s an understandable statement because most of his experiences with men have been negative, while most of his experiences with women have been positive. Combine that with the fact that women like Bonnie are genuinely smart and competent, it’s obvious he’d ask “well why SHOULDN’T a woman be in charge?”

I doubt Rockstar will ever go back to the Revolver style.

Revolver is arguably one of Rockstar’s more obscure and less popular titles. Red Dead didn’t become this huge franchise until Redemption turned it into GTA with horses.

When I went to a massage appointment several years ago while I was on vacation in the UK, the masseuse made a comment about how “men she works on usually have an erection but it’s okay that I don’t.” I felt really humiliated, and embarrassed like maybe something was wrong with my body.

Ever since that time, any time I’m about to go to an appointment (within 1-2 hours) for anything where I could potentially be exposed, I take a single sildenafil. My reasoning for this is that I find it incredibly emasculating to be having my body massaged by someone, or a laser person working on me and I sit there soft. My mind constantly goes back to that moment where someone in a position of power made that comment and it’s really messed with me ever since. I never do anything beyond taking the pill. I don’t talk about what’s going on down there and I don’t think anyone has ever commented on it either which is good because it’d be a bit awkward, but I find it more awkward when someone is rubbing on my body and I’m flaccid than the contrary where I’m rock solid (which also shows indications of health).

It’s the same thing in the locker room. If I’m going to the gym I take a sildenafil because I’m incredibly embarrassed when I’m surrounded by men who are more showers than growers (i’m definitely the latter) so I look like I’m sporting a micro even though that’s not the case. The sildenafil doesn’t guarantee any kind of strong erection but it definitely has a varied effect of like, 20-60% of an erection when nothing sexual is going on. I don’t really see any of this as sexual (I’m a straight dude), but more of a mental safety thing for myself where I feel most secure when others see me if it’s erect and not soft. Something about when it’s soft and someone can see it makes me feel like less of a person and it has a cyclical effect of softening and shrinking even more.

This is something that genuinely annoys me about RDR2. The free roam sections fully embrace emergent gameplay, but the missions are on rails to the point that even the most minor, insignificant deviation from the intended solution is an instafail.

I don’t get it— Wouldn’t designing open ended missions take LESS effort than scripting the game with a comedic amount of fail states?
