Shinovi Versus adopted a musou-esque beat-'em-up style while introducing 2 new schools. Serviceable gameplay, you're in for the new characters.
2 Deep Crimson follows up on Burst and introduces yoma monsters, tag teaming between 2 playables, and gem slot customization that can be pretty broken. Its gameplay stood out in a good way.
Estival Versus features some more characters with a focus on Ryona/Ryobi and retains the Shinovi Versus combat, but at this point it's starting to flanderize the original cast with no forward story progress.

I haven't played Burst Re:Newal or the Neptunia crossover, but those are the only games left with the action combat.
The others are spinoffs: Bon Appetit's a rhythm game, Peach Beach Splash is a third-person shooter, Reflexions and Peach Ball are coomer minigames.

Pocomo Premium has 6 good h-animations for these girls.

This game's direct sequel is pretty much the only other good one as far as being an actual game and having an actual story go. Shit starts getting bad once the series stops being a solid beat-em up and becomes a brain dead borderline musou-like.

Even though the framerate isn't consistent, Burst really is a fun game. Deep Crimson and Shinovi Versus are also good and a lot of fun.

First game has a plot that almost feels like a classic VN, yes it has a silly aesthetic of booby ninja girls, but the setting is detailed in a way that feels immersive and actually has some drama and tragedy. Gameplay is rough around the edges tho, it's janky but you get used to it.
The second game (Deep Crimson) is like 3 times better gameplay-wise, it has a good framerate on the 3DS and it's way more fluid in general, solid action beat'em up.
I never played them after this but it sounds like they got far away from the roots to become more of a moe franchise.

Not really. Play Deep Crimson for sure, though it's a shame the DLC is no longer purchasable. Shinovi Versus is worth a shot and if you like that one, Burst Renewal is a remake of Burst and it's also fine. YMMV beyond this point.

I could never get into the Dynasty Warriors type gameplay. I much preferred the side scrolling beat em up in between story beats, and even that was grindy, but it got too much in the Vita games. Then there were too many characters and it became spin-off hell. I'll miss Mirai.

I've just played through Burst ReNewal, and it's a remake of the first game but with the battle system from Estival Versus. It's good for a 10-hour romp, but not much beyond that. There are 82 missions (41 per school), but they're actually mostly the same missions with a different perspective. Asuka's final boss is Orochi while Homura's is her fighting puppet versions of her friends, with Shadow Haruka as a final boss.
I kind of understand why the series didn't really go anywhere. There's just not much else to do but crossovers and other genres. The same mission structure from Shinovi/Estival can't be repeated forever. I got all achievements before the 15-hour mark, and after that there isn't much to do except play dress-up with the girls.

I don't recommend playing the Versus games if you're a completionist, because they have a very annoying RNG lottery to get items. I remember leaving my computer on overnight using a script to keep clicking YES to start the lottery, and didn't even get all items this way. Had to leave the computer on for 4 more hours to finally get everything.

People saying the Versus series flanderize the girls - actually I thinkt that's kind of the point. They're just having fun, like a Dream Match kind of game. There's some fucked up stuff in the main series, so treat the versus series as just the characters having fun.

I want Mirai to dance in a cute idol costume and get more into the idol persona as time goes on, becoming my cute shinobi idol.

I think the issue with the missions is that although you may think 41 is a lot, they're just very repetitive. 10 of the missions are just matches and rematches against your 5 rivals from the school you didn't choose, 7 more are matches against rivals or your own friends, and the rest is just beating up random mooks.
I never played the original to completion back then, so I was actually surprised they got a final-final battle between Asuka and Homura where both power up to their final forms (that's where Homura's red hair comes from), with the main theme playing on the background.

I dont think people who jerk off BR really acknowledge just how bad the content reuse is. it is LITERALLY the exact same game as EV, if you've played one you've played the other. it's just missing the mikaguras, a few levels, and creative finishers, so its actually worse in a sense. its pretty unbelievable that they got away with throwing out everything unique about the original to slap burst's story onto EV and call it a new game, and all the fans praise it

This has been on my mind alot but it's crazy how SK has better female character writing than the Star Wars sequels.

Estival is a severely mixed bag on a gameplay level. It learned several good lessons from Shinovi and one bad one, but said bad one is almost game ruining. The good directly addresses the structure and repetitive nature of the series - Estival's general structure is MUCH more streamlined than Shinovi despite its larger cast, and it throws in a bunch of tertiary mechanics from wall running to shrine hunting to combat tech like mechs and firebombs. It was an attempt to grow and diversify the series' gameplay foundations.

And yet, it's those very foundations that Estival fucks up beyond redemption. For some godforsaken reason the devs decided to rebalance the gameplay around multiplayer and it resulted in massive drawbacks to the feeling of the core gameplay. Gone were things like unlimited dashes on characters like Hikage and Ikaruga, many cancels were outright removed so combos felt commital to a fault, and said combos felt both slower and weaker because hyperarmor was cranked up on enemies so heavy hitters like Yozakura and Yomi were left almost unplayable. Say what you will about SK's prowess as an action game but at least the pre-Estival games got the most foundational shit like hit feedback generally right, and that's the kind of stuff that Estival fucked up. Two steps forward, one huge ass leap backwards.
