Why did people not like this controller? In primary school when I went over to a friend's house they had the small ones that felt awkward to hold.

The Japs mostly. They've got smaller hands, and Bill Gates wanted Xbox to start competing in Japan, so after the initial run the Duke was retired and the Duchess was made instead.

>Posting controller gore
It's just a Dreamcast controller with lower build quality that didn't get discontinued and didn't play to any strengths other than Macroshaft brand recognition. Alongside the Playstation controller it secured the end of multiple PC genres and laid the groundwork for the 360 ensuring controller standardization, thus landing us in the current period of stagnation since approximately the mid-2000s.
The killing off of PC genres was likely even a mostly calculated market move by Microsoft, since they had originally intended to split the PC market into office work on Windows and media oriented APIs on the DirectX box.
It's a controller that prioritizes 3D games, but it is woefully inadequate at them compared to extant input methods.

Try and pander to another crowd instead of your home base and that will happen.
Ironically the switch to the Duchess lead to the Xbox 360 controller, the best controller ever made for 3D gaming.

Anyone who actually "likes" that piece of shit never actually played on it.
Especially if you were like 13 and younger.

>No good D-Pad for digital movement
>No hall-effect sticks
>No motion controls whatsoever in the gen where everyone at least had something
>Dual analog controls which suck at controlling actual 3D games more complicated than a Jump man game, requiring heavy input assistance and removal of ambiguity to facilitate said input assistance, meaning that movement, interaction and aiming are all simplified, automated and slower
>The focus on dual analog for camera also means that the face buttons do very little of the work that they're good for, since you can't take your thumb off the controls
>All games must be playable with the assumption that "close enough" input will get you through everything

The only reason that the 360 took over is because rushed devs and outsourcing studios got lazy and used the garbage API for porting and never actually put thought into a functional control scheme for something that isn't hot garbage. The 360 controller is peak baby-duckling thinking, it was obsolete almost 10 years before it launched and obsoleted again within its own gen.

>No good D-Pad for digital movement.
Yeah, the D-Pad could've been better.
>No Hall-Effect sticks.
To be fair, no one had those back then. They didn't really become popular until I believe the mid to late 2010s.
>Dual Analog controls which suck at controlling actual 3D Games.
Never had that problem with Scaler, Sonic Heroes, or Painkiller. Not even Gungriffin.
>Focus on dual analog for camera also means the facebuttons do very little work.
Face Buttons have a role, and using the right stick for camera movement is better than having an auto-follow behind the user.
>Close enough input.
I don't think so. I'm able to play Blinx without worrying about being Close Enough. Whereever I want to go, I'm able to get there. Same in Wrath of Cortex.

Tell me, which controller do you feel is the best?
