it never does. 12 is when FF went to utter shit, the story is awful, the combat is awful, half the cast is awful, the environments are awful.
Skip.

It's moreso the way it just removes the veil. I can't remember where I heard it but I once saw someone say

Fun = Meaningful Decisions/ Time

It's why games with a lot of options tend to be better received. Older JRPGs aren't necessarily technical marvels but at the least clicking the button is a decision you the player has to make. As JRPGs start to automate that part more and more, it's taking the decision making away. In FF12, like 80% of the meaningful decisions happen in the Gambit menu. With some maintenence being done for whatever Gambits can't handle. That's why 12 catches shit for it. 13 even catches shit for that.

The combat is pretty weak. Feels like how an old MMO would play

I could have used something like skillchains/magic bursts from FFXI. I liked what it was going for, I just think it lacked depth.

Shame they never really evolved this system, I actually think the 'MMO-like' style of Final Fantasy was the best they ever came up with.

i love the aesthetic its probably got my favorite artstyle for a FF game, and gideon emery is already killing it as balthier
the combat is the one thing ive known about the game for years, and finally experiencing it myself its just not clicking

The combat get's a little better when you get more gambits that lets you fine tune your companions.
So if you like that strategy/puzzle like aspect of combat, it can be rewarding.
It's like playing an idle game where you just watch the combat then experience the story.

If you don't like it now, you won't like it later. The story and characters aren't good enough to prop up the mediocrity of the gameplay like other FF games

It's more like XI with the menu combat.
Which feels really old school like you're playing a html rpg

Combat in this game is more about planning how you want it to pan out ahead of time and then sometimes reacting when something inevitably fucks up
I'm also not huge on the combat, but the story is good, characters are good and it has pretty expansive side content with a myriad of optional and secret bosses (which is my thing) so I look past it.
It's not for everyone, and I'm not gonna lie and say it gets better (it does get more interesting though), but it is still a good game, despite everything.

Just started this myself. It's one of those games I just never got around to before and am finally trying. Please tell me it's better than Final Fantasy 13 at least. That game left such a bad impression on me that I abandoned this series for nearly a decade. I've never played 12,14,15 or 16 are any of them actually good?

You play FFXII for the settings, not the story nor the gameplay.

Why do people complain about gambits so much when planning and prep work before a battle is a good 80% of the gameplay in a turn based JRPG?
Anonymous
8/2/2025, 6:40:19 PM No.717096852
Licensed and gambits really are the game. The builds happen in the menus and the results play out on the battlefield. Is it pleasingly kinetic like an ARPG? No. It's also not 4 niggas in a row, but if you think of it as "front loading" all the button presses.

This. Iโ€™m a major FF12 apologist, but the combat really isnโ€™t its best strength, the phenomenal VAs and how incredible Ivalice is are what carry it. LOADS of side content too. All the hunts and rare monsters and espers, loads of secrets.

you're playing the worst possible version of this game. emulate it on pcsx2, playing it on a crt with original hardware, or you're getting an insanely casualized experience by comparison and the game itself was never hard to begin with. I fucking hate how this is the only modern version of this game.

the best way to play it is on pc with mods and the original version is by far the worst version because you don't get gambits until many many hours in, meaning you have to play manually which is fucking terrible.

the job system they added would be fine in itself but they give you the option to add another job which the game isn't balanced for. so unless you intentionally gimp yourself, you're steamrolling the entire thing. and even if you do, they now give you control of guests and summons who have really powerul moves with no resource penalty so there are no situations you can't just summon and murder your way out of.

Try turning off your Gambits.
Suddenly, it's exactly the same menu-navigating action-select ATB you're used to! Be sure to wait your turn!!
