Was originally meant for a 1984 release when Atari was still owned by Warner, then Jack Tramiel took over Atari Corp. and sat on it for two years and only shat it out in 1986 after paying GCC who original designed the system.
>>717099132
It was actually decent for 1984, basically it was a supped up Coleco Vision with full 2600 back compat. Problem was by 1986 the NES actually hit it off in the States, plus Sega had the Master System that was miles ahead of both Atari and Nintendo graphically. The tech was moving too fast for anyone to wait.

Sega for all their fuckups at least still has some identity and even zoomers know what Sega is and have some idea of what they WERE famous for (Sonic, bringing arcade gaming at home, being the first company to upset Nintendo). When Sega left the hardware business, people were actually sad because all of their main systems (Master System to Dreamcast) still have games that are timeless to play even now. The only real irredeemable failure (both in terms of profit and worthwhile games) of a system they had was the 32X, an add on.

When Atari left the hardware industry people just shrugged and laughed. The Jaguar was just a failure after a succession of failures (5200, 7800, Lynx, Falcon) that sucked in terms of sales and worthwhile games. Even the one success they had (2600) is only interesting for its history, as even the good games feel prehistoric to anyone born after 1985.

Tramiel only knew computers of his experience at Commodore, and after falling out with Irving Gould took a bunch of Commodore employees over to Atari and bought the hardware division (the games division was spun off as Atari Games and basically became a division of Namco), and focused more on the Atari ST.

By all accounts consoles were secondary to him, largely because of his experience with home computers but Nintendo's monopoly on third party licenses.

Had Atari prepared better documentation for how their Tom & Jerry Chip + Manager was suppose to run, I bet we could've seen a few more years out of the Jaguar. Had they released the 7800 back in 1984 like originally intended, we could've seen an actual contended in the space besides the Master System and NES. Had they given the 5200 Backwards Compability and an actual reason to BUY it, they might've succeeded.
But they didn't do those things.
They failed.
We have this conversation on /vr/ all the time, why did Sega fail? Why did the Dreamcast fail? They were stumbling head over heels since the 32x and CD Addon. If they had taken the time and resource of those two and used it to work on the Saturn with the idea of 3D in mind, then it would've been the powerhouse needed to keep them afloat in the mid 1990s, leading into the 2000s with the Dreamcast.

Its sad to think of what could've been.

Judging by their most successful consoles, you can pick up the majority of games on the Genesis and play with little adjustment, they feel timeless and graphics are good enough you can discern what's going on.

You pick up a 2600 game and it looks like a pixelated cave painting and feels functionally limited because of the one button.

the CDI was both a colossal failure AND shaped the console landscape till this day. That's impressive in a way.

That legendary market crash that made Sega and Nintendo stop making consoles and Atari to redesign their new machine to not even look like a game console. Very real events that transpired because of the horrible crash of 93. Those dang dirty youtubers just keep the truth hidden, but we know.

this. Xbox. Not many people remember but Atari lived on as a publisher who had the DBZ license. Xbox's tour de force IPs are just deep underground, shot to the back of the head. Their console business might as well not exist and its just subscriptions keeping them alive in an agonizing slow car crash we all see.

>sentence period sentence
Go be a redditor somewhere else you niggerfaggot.
>So, who cares! Pick something else, there were hundreds more!
It was the dominant color palette at the time. It was almost omnipresent
>Call of Duty USED TO BE GOOD
Yeah, prior to MW and influencing FPS games in the worst way imaginable.
>ummm an entire market of good but flawed games sold at an affordable price should die actually!
Kill yourself
>Thats all they ever were.
Zoomertard detected. Consoles up until the 360 were of a bespoke design that initially could beat home computers in certain areas like fast line scrolling. Want to play Contra at home? You're better off playing it on NES because no computer could scroll that fast. Id Software's first game was a cancelled SMB3 port made specifically because no computer had a fast scrolling platformer to compete with what consoles and arcades could do.
>Whats wrong with Dudebro?
Retards that publishers catered to and dumbed down games.
>Not everything that comes out Japan is gold
And not everything in the west is either, so Japan shouldn't have aped their sensibilities, dumb zoomnigger.

I can't think of a single Atari game made after 1985 worth playing, at least on consoles.

Sega for sure. Atari games sucked. The Dreamcast had a fucking incredible library, it was just less powerful than the PS2. The added benefit of DVD’s made it so successful it drove the Dreamcast out entirely, which killed a great console.

I want to play Power Stone 2 now

>here's some qualifications in order for me to think this is an actual crash and not ummm WHATEVER HAPPENED THERE
I didn't ask for your mental gymnastics. The market was no longer interested in 16-bit machines. Sega was mulling over this internally and had several public reports about it. https://mdshock.com/2021/04/14/segas-financial-troubles-an-analysis-of-export-revenue-1991-1998/

Nintendo publicly blaming customers for not buying their games and consoles as they internally figured out how to turn things around. Call it what you want, the 16-bit crash? 16-bit slump? 16-bit decline? All that matters is it happened and was done by Sega and, to your hurt feelings, Nintendo.

This is also why Sega pushed the Sega CD so much and why the 3DO was seen as viable. In reality people just wanted to ease off on spending until real 3D came along

I refer to it as the 16 bit recession. To the average person it seemed like games were fine and you the exciting innovation of real time 3D games at home just around the corner.

But if you were in the industry, things looked dire.

I'll call it "one autist's schizophrenic delusion" and be done with it. That massive 16-bit crash that heralded the massive success of the 3DO and Jaguar. After all nobody in 1994 wanted any 16-bit games, especially ones featuring a hedgehog or monkey. They were dead in the water, everyone simply had to play Crash N Burn.

Atari was on top of the fucking world, to the point of their name being almost synonymous with "videogames". Then they shat out two stinkers and helped crash the home console market entirely.

Sega lasted longer and at least died gracefully without taking the whole market with them.
