Was originally meant for a 1984 release when Atari was still owned by Warner, then Jack Tramiel took over Atari Corp. and sat on it for two years and only shat it out in 1986 after paying GCC who original designed the system.
>>717099132
It was actually decent for 1984, basically it was a supped up Coleco Vision with full 2600 back compat. Problem was by 1986 the NES actually hit it off in the States, plus Sega had the Master System that was miles ahead of both Atari and Nintendo graphically. The tech was moving too fast for anyone to wait.

Sega for all their fuckups at least still has some identity and even zoomers know what Sega is and have some idea of what they WERE famous for (Sonic, bringing arcade gaming at home, being the first company to upset Nintendo). When Sega left the hardware business, people were actually sad because all of their main systems (Master System to Dreamcast) still have games that are timeless to play even now. The only real irredeemable failure (both in terms of profit and worthwhile games) of a system they had was the 32X, an add on.

When Atari left the hardware industry people just shrugged and laughed. The Jaguar was just a failure after a succession of failures (5200, 7800, Lynx, Falcon) that sucked in terms of sales and worthwhile games. Even the one success they had (2600) is only interesting for its history, as even the good games feel prehistoric to anyone born after 1985.

Tramiel only knew computers of his experience at Commodore, and after falling out with Irving Gould took a bunch of Commodore employees over to Atari and bought the hardware division (the games division was spun off as Atari Games and basically became a division of Namco), and focused more on the Atari ST.

By all accounts consoles were secondary to him, largely because of his experience with home computers but Nintendo's monopoly on third party licenses.

Had Atari prepared better documentation for how their Tom & Jerry Chip + Manager was suppose to run, I bet we could've seen a few more years out of the Jaguar. Had they released the 7800 back in 1984 like originally intended, we could've seen an actual contended in the space besides the Master System and NES. Had they given the 5200 Backwards Compability and an actual reason to BUY it, they might've succeeded.
But they didn't do those things.
They failed.
We have this conversation on /vr/ all the time, why did Sega fail? Why did the Dreamcast fail? They were stumbling head over heels since the 32x and CD Addon. If they had taken the time and resource of those two and used it to work on the Saturn with the idea of 3D in mind, then it would've been the powerhouse needed to keep them afloat in the mid 1990s, leading into the 2000s with the Dreamcast.

Its sad to think of what could've been.

Zoomertard detected. Consoles up until the 360 were of a bespoke design that initially could beat home computers in certain areas like fast line scrolling. Want to play Contra at home? You're better off playing it on NES because no computer could scroll that fast. Id Software's first game was a cancelled SMB3 port made specifically because no computer had a fast scrolling platformer to compete with what consoles and arcades could do.

I didn't ask for your mental gymnastics. The market was no longer interested in 16-bit machines. Sega was mulling over this internally and had several public reports about it. https://mdshock.com/2021/04/14/segas-financial-troubles-an-analysis-of-export-revenue-1991-1998/

Nintendo publicly blaming customers for not buying their games and consoles as they internally figured out how to turn things around. Call it what you want, the 16-bit crash? 16-bit slump? 16-bit decline? All that matters is it happened and was done by Sega and, to your hurt feelings, Nintendo.
