Cave Story flew so that every other indie game could roll around on the ground like retards.

How did it then, and continue to, mog every other indie game even ones that have far larger teams and many years of hindsight?

inspiration and sincerity. A lot of indies are just gambling for failed millennial who wish to win the jackpot by mindlessly coping some game from their childhood and hoping it takes off. The comparison between Steam and Gambling isn't made often enough but it seems obvious to me.

pixel was just built different
someone who is actually good at coding, enough to code a whole game from scratch starting at 1999 is rare enough as it is, but he also
>already was good at drawing
>understood what made games fun
>had a lot of pretty creative ideas for character designs, gameplay features, and general worldbuilding really
>despite having no experience composing, still managed to produce banger after banger (on a DAW he himself created btw)
>and to top it all off he only created the game not for money, nor fame, nor a joke, nor to prove a point but for the simple love of the craft and process
you can at most get 2 or 3 of these traits in any one other famous indie dev you can think of

I think of all things I respect about Cave Story, releasing it for free is on top. It's a product of an era of the internet where people would just make things for free for the love of it without any expectation of profit. Before corporations leeched onto everything and started sucking it dry for every last penny. Before the proliferation of hustle culture and "respecting the grind".
This isn't to say that I think modern indie devs are wrong for asking money for their games. I get it. Life is getting more expensive and there are bills to be paid. I just miss seeing cool things being made for the sake of being cool things that people can enjoy and nothing more.

The death of flash was the beginning of the end. These devs no longer cut their teeth on small projects and just shit out overly ambitious and underdelivered garbage, or worse, assetswaps and clones of other games. That last point is really bad even in company-made games. Almost every fucking action game is a soulslike or has soulslike elements in it now just because souls sold so well.

I don't think it mogs every other indie game. It's rough around the edges for sure. But it has one thing going for it, which is that the story has consequence to it. It achieves that by combining its cutesy art style and characters with jarring deaths and violence. And all of that leaves an emotional impact on the player. There's bitter-sweetness to it. I think that's the most memorable aspect of the game, that a lot of other games struggle to achieve.

I agree, I have a lot of respect for Pixel for releasing Cave Story for free. It is an extremely based move. This is exactly the kind of decision that makes me want to support a developer, that's why I bought Cave Story. I regret supporting Nicalis, but I don't regret supporting Pixel.

Cool, so why are they talking about Toby Fox and not the game. "Toby Fox sent me to a youtube page" is not "I downloaded the game and played it." They want to be part of the moment, not enjoy the thing itself and they'll forget about it a day later.

Remember when Zoomers were obsessed with Kate Bush for a week? Or Aeon Flux?

Fans being annoying faggots that can't shut up about swearing their allegiance to their imagined internet daddy wherever they go is hardly the fault of the said internet daddy. It's just the nature of being an annoying faggot. If they didn't latch onto Toby Fox, they'd latch onto someone else.

So what? If even 1% of the zoomers that check out the old thing their favorite e-celeb told them about become actual fans of it, that's cool. The alternative is that they never check out the old thing and nobody cares about it.

But they don't, and they won't. Not to mention the people that come in with that origin are the kinds who make demands of the established fandom. We've seen this over and over again and your idealistic view just doesn't conform to what actually happens.
>The alternative is that they never check out the old thing and nobody cares about it.
The people who get interested organically rather than follow trends of their social-surrogate will be the same quantity and don't cause the damage that the 99% of trend chasers do.

I'm kinda upset that the game lets you save her in the best ending. In the regular ending her dying was the most emotionally potent moment of the game. The fact that you can just avoid that lessens the impact a bit. But I didn't know that the first time I played it, so it was very touching and potent.
