I functionally see little difference between X and Rock Man. Rock and Roll are already very human-like, and it's not like humans have "programming" through their biology (hormones, instincts, patterns, emotional responses, etc) and environment.

Mega Man X itself is purposefully vague on what the hell actually separates Reploids and Robot Masters (especially with Robot Masters becoming a lost technology at some point) and Classic doesn't help matters with rogue robots like King, Proto Man, and Bass floating around when needed for a plot

Functionally there probably IS no difference with Classic blurbs implying or directly stating that the AI technology for completely autonomous and free acting robots is already there and what's keeping it from developing is the series' own tone and the human viewpoint of Robot Masters as being utilitarian tools that have enough cognition to not need babysat or constantly repaired, Classic itself agrees that robots having expiration dates as cognitive machines is pretty fucked hence MM9's plot

The implication of Reploids is that they have the "x" factor where they can decide to tell you to buzz off and the classic era the robots had to obey their masters. Wily tells them to rampage then they go do it even fi they don't understand the reasoning. X games add the ability to rebel and not follow orders, which introduces the Maverick or Irregular problem. but Reploids are mostly jsut infected with a killer virus anyways, but sometiems NOT. it's all very inconsistent.

Fucking Dr. Light is responsible for the death of humanity. A toaster doesn't need to have complex thoughts and free will! Dr. Light shows us all the folly that comes from playing God. He's was so busy wondering if he could, he never stops to consider if he should. Time and again the world is plunged into apocalyptic level events because of the technology that he developed. Go far enough into the future and humanity doesn't even exist anymore, replaced by robots called Carbons, that look human, and act human, but aren't human.
I have come to hold great contempt for Dr. Light as I've aged.
