This is one of those games where it really does look better when you’re actually playing it. The screenshots and trailer made this look garish compared to past versions, but it’s really not so bad.

Cover up the sprites and you'd never know what game it is, it could be any $5 random indie game on steam. PS1 3D environments at least limited the area you could see and made sure that it was at least somewhat interesting to look at. What value is there in expanding the environment and the view of the player if you put nothing in it and put forward zero attempt to make this expanded view more interesting?

No details in the sand, no flora or fauna, flat water, basic terrain textures on the far cliffs, sure it's a cherry picked screenshot but it sure is a lazy setting.

The world looks good and the colors are pleasing but the sprites look like shit. Devs are massively overestimating the value of 'nostalgia' - Not to say that lower-fidelity player models don't make something *imaginative* which is important to the player; leaving room for interpretation and a reasonable suspension of disbelief, but the pixel puke is just lazy - and the Japanese tend to go from one extreme to the other; from the hyper-detailed FF15 to pixel trash; like the virgin killer sweater being one of these impossibly stupid ideas to bring sexually repressed men to start dating - that end up as nothing but a meme.

Star Ocean 2 and Valkyrie Profile has some gorgeous backgrounds, they were pre-rendered and you really don't need to to that anymore not that the technology is more than adequate but it sucks to see them go. They look nice especially if you played them on their intended display like a CRT.
